Our next opening is in 2023 and I hope we're working on a long-term deal with ECU. If we're going to play any academy, it needs to be Navy.

That’s going to be exceedingly difficult with three of their four OOC spots eternally spoken for. They DO have openings in 22 and 24 but of course just the one. Impressive that Marshall managed to corral them.

ODU’s best bet is to join the American, or at least for Army and/or Air Force to join and open up some OOC slots.

Agree, and the only openings are for an FCS game until then in each year 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Any FCS games you'd like to see ODU schedule?

I expect to see a mix of NSU, HU and VMI, since they will travel decently, are affordable to book and get us closer to 6 wins.

I'd love to see some of our old CAA in-state foes. That won't happen since they'll land much bigger pay days from the P5. But it'd be fun to play them in those spots since they bring decent crowds and are fun to needle during the games. What about you?

I didn't realize they had scheduled Navy H/H too. That is a great get for them.

CAMPBELL 03-lmfao Kidding. NSU, HU, and VMI are a good warmup games if played in the first month of the season. W&M, Richmond, and JMU would be a great game if we can put a team out there that won't slip up and lose vs one of those three.

Of course I'd love to see our old VA CAA and Hampton Roads FCS schools as a part of our schedule. Outside of those guys, Delaware, Georgetown, Howard, Mercer, Kennesaw State, and Villanova would all move the needle for me. But since we only play one FCS team a year, and seeing how many VA FCS teams there are, I doubt we'll ever get that far down the list to those guys.

We are lucky with our OOC schedule, very few G5 schools have the P5 scheduled like we do. Think ECU is the only one with more H&Hs.

I'm pretty sure Georgetown and the rest of the Patriot League don't give enough scholarships to count as a win for Bowl Eligibility.

The only FCS schools we should play are NSU, Hampton, W&M, and JMU. I have no issues with FCS games, but they need to be somewhat competitive. The VMI game wasn't even competitive for the backups backups. At least with Hampton, we have a decent shot at getting some kids valuable playing time.

Hate the VMI game. Hope we never schedule again. Beyond the guaranteed win it does nothing to raise our profile and is lopsided to the point of embarressment.

$800k for a winnable game is a huge win. Set aside the politics, they are playing football. Plus, sounds like those who went last time enjoys themselves (results aside). This is a huge win for ODU considering Liberty is probably trying to home/home with us.

What? Are you crazy? Liberty is of little value as a home game for us. But taking $800k for a winnable road game is big. We just need to shell out $100k for an FCS team at home in 2023 and we will net $700k (minus travel expenses) for that transaction. If we did a home-and-home with Liberty, there would be no net at all.

My issue isn’t with politics, it’s with optics. You offer the buy game down, not up. Going to Liberty to kick off their FBS existence is one thing. Going there for cash on the regular indicates a shift in the balance of power. ODU and Liberty already have a home-and-home in 2021 and 2022. They could have easily arranged a home-and-home that starts there in 2023 and ends at ODU in 2024 or later.

This is a money move. Here’s the important Wood quote in the press release:

Quote:It’s a difficult balance for us to play a competitive schedule and yet generate the revenue you need while balancing a non-conference schedule. You’ve got to be smart when these opportunities present themselves.

Liberty buying ODU like a Big South or MEAC program is a terrible precedent. It sends a message that ODU is already down to fourth in the Virginia FBS pecking order.

Maybe this is a unique circumstance too, but I don’t like the look of bending the knee to an FBS callup.

Hellz yeah. $800k for a winnable, in state game? This is a no brainer.

Bad optics to who? Does anyone really care if pays who in a buy game? Do you think recruits (or anyone for that matter) is going to say "Liberty must be the better program bc they are paying a buy game?"
