NIU is #2 in the Academic Top 25

Edit: corrected spelling...serves me right because I'm usually a freak about spelling (thanks NIU010)

Wouldn't we drop in these rankings if that happened? Not sure that would be a bad thing though, since I would think NIU's goal would be to graduate as many students as possible, not just football players.

Clearly, NIU fans need a “That's all right, that's O.K., you're gonna work for us someday,” chant.

"So Northern Illinois scores major points because football players graduate at a higher rate (66%) than the Northern Illinois student body at large (51%). "

51% graduation rates is nothing to we should be proud of. NIU is having a major problem attracting high caliber students that can graduate. This downward trend has continued for the last couple of years.

Part of this is the accessibility of NIU as a suitcase school. Students who (or is it whom, sh*t, shouldn't have slept through English) can easily venture out from the suburbs can "try" college for a semester and not worry if it isn't for them.

51% graduation rates is nothing to we should be proud of. NIU is having a major problem attracting high caliber students that can graduate. This downward trend has continued for the last couple of years.

In view of precisely that, NIU has recently changed its Mission and Values:

NIU Statement of Vision and Mission

The vision of Northern Illinois University is to be the premier student-centered, research-focused public university in the Midwest, contributing to the advancement of knowledge for the benefit of the people of the region, the state, the nation, and the world. With this vision, the mission of the University is to promote excellence and engagement in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, creativity and artistry, and outreach and service.(more at link)

http://www.niutoday.info/2012/05/14/niu-...w-mission/

Can't be that and only graduate 51% of students.

Will (can?) NIU live up to these lofty values? Is being the "the premier student-centered, research-focused public university in the Midwest," even possible? Even remotely possible? The University struggles in some measurements against ISU and UIC etc, so how can NIU surpass say, Minnesota or even Illinois as the "the premier student-centered, research-focused public university in the Midwest."

Management 101 says don't set unachievable goals.

Overall it is a great story and we need to tell it and sell it. Marketing matters right? However, I agree the student body needs to pick it up or the university will really start to have stats the rival the local community college. None of us want that....

RE: Academic Top 25
It's difficult for a public school that is located near a big metro area to have a good graduation rate. The public schools with high graduation rates are frequently located in smaller cities and college towns, which means that most students are full-time. Being in a remote area tends to discourage part-time students.

FSUs overall graduation rate (not specifically the football team) is good, but they, like the University of Florida, benefit somewhat from being located in small cities in the northern part of the state. UCF, USF, FIU, and so on, are all located in big cities and they all have mediocre graduation rates. There are some exceptions, like various University of California schools, but it's true more often than not.

Marketing! NIU's curriculum is so tough, that only 51% of incoming freshmen even graduate. Are you top h.s. seniors up to the challenge?
