Exclamation Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
OK, I know this has been discussed to death and back but I have a question to see how everyone else feels.

If the Hoover Met were to be reconfigured for football/soccer and hold 25k-30k people, would you be interested in moving there until we get our OCS???

I know this is not what we want, but would it be better then Legion Field???

And this would only be until we can get our OCS built, not a permanent solution, but a bandaid to fix the current problem.

I don't think if this were to happen it would hurt our efforts to get our OCS.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
My personal opinion is that it would be better than what we have, could possibly even attract more fans, but no where near the solution to our problems.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
Hoover Met currently holds 10k if they made it a permanent wraparound that'd really only get it to like 20k not 30 like you're suggesting.

as you can see 50% of the seats are currently in the endzone... and there is no way that it would be cost effective for Hoover or UAB to put in permanent seats for our games. portable bleachers add a few hundred seats each. So obviously there is no way to move in bleachers for 5 games to magically double the # of seats in the game.

I don't understand how this is even a better venue than Legion Field... Location is only better for the White Flight Crowd and really doesn't make sense for UAB

No. we played there.. its not enough seats, the seats it does have offer terrible site lines, and it moves us farther from campus.

And neither Hoover nor UAB is about to fork over the money necessary to upgrade it as a temporary solution...

We have this exact same thread at least once a month.

I lost my roster. Whose turn is it to start this thread in January

I think it's mine, but in the form of a rant.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
Every time this discussion comes up I'm compelled to present the deal-breaking issue. At first I was hoping it would kill the suggestion for good...now I'm down to hoping that just one person reads and remembers:

Forget seats. Forget location. Forget Hoover vs. Northwest Bham. Here is why it can NEVER happen:

As a member of CUSA - and whatever conference we are in at any point in the future - we have specific requirements related to our media deals that our home stadium MUST meet. In this sense, we have actually been very fortunate in having Legion Field, because there is no other venue in the Birmingham area that meets those requirements. If you're tempted to think a place like the Met could be retrofitted to meet those standards, just consider all of the features, camera angles, graphics, replay capabilities, and the instant/constant connectivity required for everyone from a broadcast team (for TV broadcasts) to radio broadcast personnel to the Sports Editor of the Kaleidoscope. The Met is not an option...and Regions Field is not likely to be one either.

not true two or three months ago i asked if the NEW ball park could be expanded for football if we had to move and a month or so after that someone else asked about the new park as well asking about the new park is not the same as asking about hoover

No. I don't know why people keep suggesting this, but it doesn't work. Keep football and soccer fields separate from one another.

Ok, so they expand to hold 20k, that is big enough to hold everyone at any of our games except our first one against Troy this season.

There has been rumors, at one time, that Hoover may go after an MLS team. No, I don't see it happening either, but it was the rumor. Soccer fields are not that different in size then football fields. They do play soccer at Legion Field after all. I'm not talking about temperary change. There will be no need for it to hold baseball once the new Regions Park is completed.

In the reconfiguration, the new stadiums built, in what in now Left and Center Field would become the home side. Also add a pressbox at the top of it that would meet all the media and telecommunication needs.

I also want to add that I live northeast of Birmingham, so this isn't an idea that would make my life easier. Legion is closer to me then Hoover.

I'll leave most of your points to others (except to ask how long you've been following UAB football, because if you're using 20k as your max you're on drugs...if we screw up and start a season 2-0 or 3-0, you'd have us turning 10,000+ fans away) but on the bolded section, are you being serious with that? We have a couple of people on this board VERY well qualified to tell you what's included in a modern, FBS "pressbox" and the likelihood that one could be added to the Met at a cost that doesn't make it not worth the investment for the venue. But do you know how many crow's nests even a tiny stadium at the FBS level requires for TV broadcasts? Do you know how many there are at Legion Field? All of those have to be fully wired, too (with more than just Internet connections). Then you have space requirements on both sidelines and beyond the end zones for TV and photo media. I'm telling you, that one sentence is a deal-breaker even if everything else in your suggestion wasn't.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
I have been following UAB football for 10+ years and have been going to games for that long. I was at the Rubin Studdard game, so yes, I've seen 40k+ at a UAB game, I also saw 75% of those people show up mid 2nd quarter and leave just after halftime.

These change to the Met would be made by the city of Hoover, not UAB, so the cost would be up to them. But ultimately you guys have gotten off on tangents. Forget the logistics of getting the Met up to standards. If it were done, what are your feelings about leaving Legion Field for a newly reconfigured Met for the time between now and getting our OCS??? Do you see this as a possitive or would it be worse then what we have right now???

Just trying to have an open discussion without belittling anyone, which for some reason this board has a hard time doing.

The city of Hoover would rather have the SEC baseball tourney than have 5 UAB games each year. What you're talking about is a 40 million dollar project by Hoover city to throw UAB a bone. That is a lot of money for such a small return and makes 0 business sense. We're getting off on tangents because it isn't possible to make your plan happen. Many of us are either from Hoover or in construction related businesses. Basically we're calling your plan crap. We have threads like these constantly pop up by new people that don't understand the logistics of making something like this happen. It gets really old. If Jon Solomon sees this thread it will make a front page sports section article about why UAB should move to the met. He already is stupid enough to think UAB to the belt is a good idea.

welcome to blazertalk btw.

Let's go ahead & include the Barons new stadium talk as well.

It won't work there either because it only seats 9 thousand at most.

How can the logistics be dismissed when they make the question moot? If it is practically impossible to configure the Met to host UAB football, how is it even possible to have the debate you propose?

It is just Solomon trying to find a new article to write about.

The title being - UAB should move its games to Hoover.
