It's like a gateway drug. Pretty soon you'll have scholarships.

Not a chance. Can you name one non-scholarship program that has added a full 63 DI-AA scholarships? Teams go the other way.

Plus with on campus residence and meal plan, Stetson is nearly $50,000.00 per year. After you go non-scholarship, those 63 kids are worth $3.1 MILLION a year. If you go scholarship, you essentially are losing $6.2 MILLION a year because you go from having an income of $3.1 to an outgoing amount of $3.1 which is $6.2. So again I say...not happening. There isn't a non-scholarship program making enough off a "money" game or two and ticket sales to cover that cost.

Outside of Morehead (I have no reason why they do it.), most if not all non-scholarship programs are private. The reasons private schools are non-scholarship is because they make a TON of money off tuition and increase male enrollment. It also for lack of a better term gives those private schools access to more federal/state "need" based aid that those schools struggle to receive.

There is absolutely zero precedent for this. If you look at all of the PFL teams, the only one that has added scholarships is Austin Peay - they had scholarship football originally, and went back after a regime change.

If you look at the founding members, all of whom save Evansville still play there, they just moved their D-III non-scholarship programs up to Division I to comply with NCAA rules. Scholarships would be by far the largest expense for a program like the one Stetson has. They don't have a stadium, and they have no idea how well this is going to go over. Unless they start getting 10,000 fans a game - which is difficult for all but the elite FCS school to do - they won't have the revenues to justify switching from having those players pay tuition (a huge source of revenue that won't show up in the athletic ledger) to paying them to go to a very expensive private school.

Stetson, Jacksonville, and Mercer will all retain their non-scholarship status for the foreseeable future. Kennesaw, as a very large public school, cannot make the kind of revenue off of 63 student athletes that the private schools could, so it makes more sense for them to go scholarship. I'm not sure why they're waiting to make the move unless nobody wants them (that will change if there is any shift in the SoCon involving ASU or GASO).

Good points about the non-scholarship situation. Out of the A-Sun schools, I don't think there's any doubt that Mercer is positioned best to be scholarship at some point. They are starting with a 10,200 seat stadium and are rolling along with the process of setting up football.

No offense but personally I dont' see it. There is still no precedent for it at all. If you were going to go scholarship, you should go from the start of football. All non-scholarship football does is serve to get adminstrators addicted to the money. That money becomes very hard to part with over time.

The stadium will be nice, but keep in mind others have announced newer facilities as well. It looks like Jacksonville is doing a $85 million dollar project and Campbell is on the verge of breaking ground on their side as well.

There doesn't have to be precedent, just people that want to see it happen.
There wasn't precedent for all this realignment stuff either...

Besides Austin Peay, most of the current NEC football members were non-schollie in the not too distant past. Slowing adding schollies.

Stony Brook went all the way to 63 4 years ago. Albany will next year. Rest are at 40

Albany and Stony Brook are both public schools. NEC schools are likely still pulling in a good amount of coin from their programs, and they're roughly on the same level as the non-scholarship teams.

This is the NEC's list of non-conference wins

Sacred Heart - Dartmouth
Robert Morris - Lafayette
Duquesne - Dayton, Valparaiso
St. Francis (PA) - Morehead State
Monmouth - Rhode Island
Albany - Colgate
Wagner - Holy Cross, Colgate (NCAA Tournament)

And, for a better picture, their losses to non-scholarship teams:

Georgetown over Wagner
Lehigh, Cornell over Monmouth
Marist, Bucknell over Bryant
Dayton over Robert Morris
Lehigh over Central Connecticut State
Colgate over Sacred Heart

Rhode Island is one of the worst teams in the country, having lost 13 straight games, and a large part of that is them transitioning down under the NEC's scholarship limit as they get ready to join for football next academic year while still playing a full CAA schedule. But I digress: the NEC had an 8-8 record against non-scholarship teams, and those games comprised 60% of the NEC's non-conference schedule.

I guess my point is that the NEC, from a cost/benefit perspective, isn't a great raison d'etre for scholarship football. If they wanted scholarship football, they would have just gone ahead and fielded a scholarship team in the Big South in the first place.

Rhode Island actually reversed course on its NEC plans this past summer, they will remain in CAA football.
