Hopefully he'll take Heritage in a more positive direction. But him leaving the Senate early blows.

Going to Heritage isn't really leaving the fight.

And it's not as though 1) A conservative republican won't replace him or 2) win the next senatoral election by a large margin.

Not if Nikki Haley appoints herself. She's about the only SC GOPer that could lose statewide.

Oops I forgot about Mr Ravenel...

Regarding #1 ...

Regarding #2 ...

Karen Floyd wouldn't stand a chance statewide in SC. You have to kill it in the Grand Strand, Rock Hill, Aiken, and the I-85 corridor to win statewide as a Republican. Floyd gets killed in Spartanburg County largely due to people who've dealt with her personally or those who know people who have. There are a few other epic fails the SCGOP could lob out there who would lose. I hope Tom Davis runs for the seat and wins. He's a real deal liberty Republican... the most conservative member of the SC Assembly. He would be RLC endorsed in a heartbeat.

Doesn't make sense unless he thinks he's the only one that can take down Lindsey.

Someone on the Daily Kos posted a diary with some of the potential options with links. But does not get into their reelection chances.

Your point really has nothing to do with mine.

Yes, there could always be another Todd Akin. The point is that there is no chance a dem wins a SC senate seat unless the GOP candidate just implodes.

The point is Demint retiring gives Dems nothing. So them being happy about him retiring is pretty pointless since the chances of him being replaced by another republican are fairly certain.

That was my thoughts. When was the last time a dem won a state wide election in SC?

The Secretary of Education before the current one. That'd be an office that flipped just two years ago.

Jim Hodges in '98, but he lost reelection convincingly. He's the only dem to win since 1987. There may have been some meaningless elected office won by a dem that I'm not aware of.

You'll probably get a RINO in there. Somebody that believes in math and science. Tim Scott would be a good pick.

Plus he was leading the tea party charge in the senate. Rand Paul doesn't have time to do that and run for president.

Karl Denninger over at the Market Ticker (best economic blog out there in my opinion) sounds like he thinks DeMint sees the writing on the wall and is getting out of Dodge. I think that's a pretty good analysis. DeMint is one of the few who seem to get that we are on the verge of a complete economic collapse and can imagine it could be a good thing to get out Congress.
