Actually, according to the website formerly known as the Birmingham News, Pat Dye's choice was Kirby Smart. Guess that's why he didn't get the job. I think ol' Pat should stick to materials handling and leave the football to the professionals

Wonder if this means AU feels that Malzahn had nothing to do with whatever the NCAA is investigating. I sure they've considered that.

Geez, can we set up an apology board and joke explanation board, so this board isn't so cluttered.

Actually, there was a good argument for hiring Claude down there. They seem to think their problem is winning football games. It's a lot worse than that, and bringing back someone who was on Chizik's staff won't fix their problems. Claude would have. Sure, he would have gone 0-12 and lost to bammer by three digits, but he would have run off the felons, dealers and users so the next guy could have a new start.

Auburn will regret not hiring Claude Neil Callaway.

Malzhan is going to need a disciplinarian & O-line coach. He could do a lot worse than XCNC.

I was wondering yesterday if Malzhan's & McGee's paths have crossed before & were they both at Arkansas at the same time.

Malzhan came from high school to coach at Arkansas & coached there a few years before going to Auburn.

I think they had 5 good choices to be their coach (Petrino, Smart, Malzhan, Strong, and Fisher) and picked the one that would be the popular choice with the Auburn faithful and their bandwagon fans. Probably without concern for his involvment in the recruiting.

Someone in an earlier post stated that Malzhan had an early jump off of the Titanic; and now he gets to come back as the leader of the survivors.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. Malzhan was the one guy that would take the job.

RE: NBR: Auburn naming Gus Malzhan head coach
It just seems like the wrong move to me because Chitzk was transitioning toward a smash mouth offense to compete with the teams in the west. The players being recruited for the current class were recruited to play smash mouth ball, but now the head coach is a spread offense man.
I believe the search was bent more toward being comfortable and maybe a level of control for the AD, who I believe days are numbered then it was for long term stability.

RE: NBR: Auburn naming Gus Malzhan head coach
I agree rebounder. They essentially did the same thing last year when they converted from a spread team to a smash mouth team. I think the transition back may be a little easier. The biggest problem for Auburn last year was they couldn't get the guys they were counting on to stay in school.(for whatever reason) I am sure Malzahn has a connection with numerous players, as he probably helped recruit them, even some of the freshmen last year. I am guessing this had something to do with the hire. I still think Auburn went after Petrino first, but something just didn't work out there. The hire is solid in my opinion, just not the home run many were expecting.

And FWIW Kibry Smart never made any sense to me. He would instantly be hated by the Bama fans, and half the Auburn fans probably wouldn't want somebody coming directly from that program.

I doubt Auburn had anyone to choose from, other than Gus, Patrino, and an assistant coach or two.

None of the big names would even consider going to AU, in it's current state.

That, and now when he's interviewed by the NCAA he'll have an AU counsel at his elbow rather than a Jonesboro lawyer with no incentive to shut him up.
