And more on libs hating science

Quote:The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.

BMW, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota and VW said their warranties will not cover fuel-related claims caused by E15. Ford, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo said E15 use will void warranties, says Darbelnet, citing potential corrosive damage to fuel lines, gaskets and other engine components.

This has been one of my main concerns about using EtOH. I know Brazil does it, and it has been championed here. But, I am curious if they are penny-wise/pound foolish...are their vehicles suffering from corrosion, making it more expensive, and harder on the environment?

Small displacement motors like in economy cars and even high horsepower outboard motors on boats are particularly vounerable. Im on the fence with ethanol fuels, but not for this reason. Manufactureres are trying to keep their costs down and profit margins high by not adapting to the new fuel. It's completely within their ability, but they fear that higher prices would drive consumers away from ethanol compatible fuels.

Those higher prices come from the fact that more energy is required to make suitable engines. If you never break even in cost, then you're never breaking even in energy consumption either.

It's not clear that EtOH is a solution to the environmentalists' concerns.

At the bio energy conference I was at last month. Ethanol wasn't even presented. It's amazing to me it gets the play it does. It's like an invisible hand is marketing it to us. It makes zero sense to do this. You could put faculative anaerobes to work on the bi products of corn and generate more energy.

METHANE is our future and we can do it today. Yes they sell conversion kits TODAY.

We didn't get out of the stone age for lack of rocks and therefore, we aren't going to get out of the oil age for lack of oil.

Car companies are eventually going to have to adapt to alternative fuels.

Corn isn't even close to the best source to produce ethanol from either. Not only is it pretty inefficient, but it also drives up the price of grain used to feed livestock and make food.
I read something a while back about microbes that produces a precursor of a chemical compound that is a suitable alternative to diesel. Unfortunately, it was the DOE that has developed the technology and hence it will probably never be commercially available. Hopefully it won't go the way of the 70 mpg carburetor.
Alternative diesel would be a much more worthwhile pursuit than ethanol IMO.

But Iowa is always 1st in line for nominating the presidential candidates for the 2 major parties. If it was CA then homeowners insurance would cover earthquakes.
