It's depressing for sure. JMU has had every opportunity to make a move and now they will probably have to make a move in full that they didn't want to make.

I know people do not like the SBC, but being in football with ASU and GSU would be a lot of fun. But I would love the MAC with UD because there you would have descent football and basketball.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
Anyone arguing that even the Sun Belt isn't a step up for olympic sports at this point is joking themselves. I know it's not a complete apples to apples comparison but the SBC is the 15th ranked D1 conference, compared to the CAA's 24th rank.
Better perception is indeed there. They're losing WKU and MTSU, their two current bball powers. I'll have to look at RPI ranking of remaining SBC members (and incoming) and remaining CAA members (plus Charleston).

What is probably sad 09 is that there will be some that will still defend the CAA and why JMU should stay in the CAA, even for football. Even though we no longer belong there and have outgrown the league in football.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
Okay I crunched the numbers. The SBC is 9 ranks ahead of the CAA this past season as a conference. When you count the new SBC and new CAA basketball members, here is the RPI breakdown.

Sun Belt RPI: 207/220
Appalachian State – 267
Arkansas State – 161
Arkansas-Little Rock – 172
Georgia Southern – 264
Georgia State – 210
Louisiana-Lafayette – 222
Louisiana-Monroe – 301
*New Mexico State – 57
South Alabama – 155
Texas-Arlington – 120
Texas State – 273
Troy – 276

CAA RPI: 208
Charleston – 125
Delaware – 142
Drexel – 206
Hofstra – 325
James Madison – 185
North Carolina-Wilmington – 300
Northeastern – 164
Towson – 158
William & Mary – 266

I have an asterisk next to NMSU because they're still rumored to be added to the SBC. ASU and GSU are all but official.
If the SBC adds NMSU, their avg RPI is 207, just ahead of this year's CAA RPI. The SBC RPI without adding NMSU is 220, a slight step behind the CAA in RPI.
They did get two teams in this year compared to our one team, but MTSU had a very high rpi and earned an at-large. Consider that an outlier for this example.

You could make an argument that basketball is a lateral move overall.

JMU had a chance at CUSA. At the Final Four last year Bonowsky the CUSA comish. had informal talks with ODU, JMU and Delaware. He offered all 3 as package deal. At that time both JMU and Delaware said they had no interest what-so-ever.

Yes we're all very familiar with that widely reported rumor, but the real question is, is that cusa interest still there? Odu's fb coach commented on wanting us added to cusa.
Keep in mind that that was our previous president that turned down odu and cusa's talks.

Yeah, we can always hope for that I suppose. This is really the first hit of realignment for the CAA and we all knew it was coming thanks to the C7. There might be more to come that'll put JMU in a better position.

If not, we're in the CAA, and now closer to being preseason #1 in a league that was already a one bid league anyways.

I think this would have shifted CUSA as an eastern based conference. CUSA would have most likely not extended invites to UTSA and FAU if there would have been a 3 school deal with ODU, JMU and Delaware.

I don't see any interest now unless CUSA loses 3 more schools.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
So what are the options if anyone knows? Just curious as I am at a lost.

I guess you can stick with the CAA and hope for the best or move on to a FBS conference. For me the MAC is the best sport if you want to have good basketball with decent football. CUSA would be great for a geographic standpoint because of Marshall, ODU, Charlotte, WKY, MTSU, and so on.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
I really think now that we're losing all geographic reasons to stay in the CAA, there is absolutely no reason for JMU to stick with the conference. I was on the fence with the the FBS thing, but now that ASU and the real GSU are gone, we've got to go too. We have two new FBS coaches to push MM and we've got some momentum with Basketball - we're at the perfect moment to make the move.

I'd like to see the MAC but I'd be good with C-USA or following ASU and GSU too (at least for a while).

Just joined the boards. Anyone here got unique thoughts on our options now, given the Mason news and App and GSouth going up?

If you lurk several boards on here, you will gain a lot of insight into various realignment news and ideas. Some of these posters on this site are people located in athletic departments, but you need to figure out who are who's on this site. The SBC site has some good info as well as the conference realignment board. I think our main option at the moment is the SBC. I guess we could get a MAC invite if we push it.

Idaho and NMST will be football only member of the SBC. That leaves an opening in the MAC, maybe one in SBC, maybe one in CUSA, maybe we get lucky and land in the A12? Who knows?

I guess we can put the SBC thing to rest. Sounds like our admin doesn't want to join the SBC and it sounds like Liberty could be the next SBC add. I guess it is MAC or bust.

You really can't make this stuff up anymore. We now require the generosity of other conferences "wanting us" without significant reason, when they have proven thus far that they clearly don't want jmu.

UD and NE on the clock in regards to A-10 membership. If they leave, does the CAA fall apart or absorb Big South, NEC, and Socon schools to stay alive?

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
JMU.....crickets.........I do hope though and believe that something will happen for JMU. But all of this silence makes me think that either we have incompetent leadership or behind the scenes JMU will get an invite somewhere. I fear incompetency because so far we have turned our nose up to CUSA last year, the SBC just recently, The MAC had interest, even the old BE had interest, but we are still in a crappy conference and in FCS. I am not usually this negative, but man, when you see everyone else move up and your school is still sitting back, it stinks. I thought ODU made a good move last year and was upset when JMU decided not to tag along. I am equally upset that we decided not to go with ASU and GSU to the SBC. Now look at JMU. JMU is like the Jews in the old testament where they had so much pride that they refused to humble themselves and obey the will of God, instead they turned their nose up at God and eventually God cut them from the vine and the Jewish system withered away. Eventually, in 70 A.D. Jerusalem was completely destroyed by the Romans. But at least JMU still has hope and it isn't too late.

With that said, I do believe JMU will move up, but where is TBD. It may be now that JMU is pushing for the MAC. But CUSA with ODU will be just as good.
