I would think it's just speculation, I mean, our bball hasn't been all that good. How about that idea though? Move all sports to A10 and find a home for football in an FBS conference?
that would actually be the next best scenario to going to an actual power conference, and may even be better than the nBE from a basketball standpoint... maybe a touch below it. I'd have to compare their rpi at season's end.

MAC for football, all else we move to the A-10 along with GMU.

I can't say this with any certainty, but I have a feeling the A-10 would shy away from adding a school that has or will have FBS football. UMass upgraded and they're a flight risk, and nobody they have or might add has it. And JMU is a lot more likely than UMass to send the rest of its sports to the MAC down the line, because y'all see them as institutionally similar, while UMass just wanted a place to park its football while they keep their eyes on the ex-Big East prize.

i'd say this is the preferable destination until a true mid-level east coast conference forms.

i agree with cyniclone though, i can't see the a10 bothering with any schools that are even slightly rumored to have or will have FBS level football.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
i like this quote from goapps70 that shows that there is probably something behind this sbc rumor.

"Again, assuming the options to be discussed March 9th are in fact correct, it is HIGHLY doubful that a room full of college presidents are going to discuss moot points. IF UD and JMU are discussed, they would have to have shown interest."

I couldn't agree more. Why would you talk about a school that has shown no interest?

That makes me think up this hypothetical:

Let's say the A-10 issues you an invite, but it's contingent on dropping all talk of an FBS upgrade. Would you trade a move up in football for a move up in basketball?

hell no. football drives the james madison bus and thank god for that. that's just my opinion of course. we have some basketball fans that might prefer that, younger fans are more passionate about our football though.

I didn't think so either, but the A-10 has been the fervered dream of nearly every CAA school in Virginia for years. I wondered if the allure would be enough now. I think if it's the A-10 we saw this year, no Big East intervention on the horizon, that's a different story. But I wouldn't sacrifice ODU's C-USA membership, even if the compromised A-10 is still better in basketball.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
I have been hoping the Belt would add App. St., Ga. So., JMU and NMSU but the arrogance of some JMU fans is a bit much. Most of the schools in the Sun Belt were very successful at the FCS (1AA) level but could not pass up the chance to move up.

I still hope you guys are added and we get divisions to help with travel. In case you haven't been keeping score, the Sun Belt has been outperforming CUSA in recent years and matches up very well with the MAC, especially when it comes to attendance. Adding some traditional FCS powerhouses who have fan support is going to vault the Belt beyond CUSA and widen the gap with the MAC in terms of attendance. Texas State and South Alabama are both sleeping giants who should be able to compete very soon and I expect the same our of App. St. and Ga. So.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
Yeap, you will find many JMU fans are definitely snobbish toward certain conferences. It's a shame really. Some focus more on the details and that this school isn't as academically on par with JMU as this school is so, they tend to look down on a school that may not be as good academically. In reality, who cares about academics in an athletic conference. I know it is important, but there comes a time when you just have to find ways to advance the athletic program and just get it down academically-everything else will fall into place.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
BTW, supposedly these are the options they will be discussing the weekend of March 9. Also as noted by a cajun fan, it now seems like NMSU has the edge. But as someone else has stated, the SBC is at 8 and would need 4, but if WKU leaves, they would need 5 to get to 12. By adding only three, that will put them at 11.

Here are the options they will be discussing according the SB Insider: http://sunbeltinsider.blogspot.com/

1. Add Appalachian State & Georgia Southern
2. Add Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, New Mexico State and Idaho
3. Add Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, James Madison and Delaware
4. No Expansion for Sun Belt Conference
5. A plan that will add two members for all others sports beside football.

Also from the blog

"That leaves the SBC with only 10 all sports members and 8 football playing members." This make me think it would a football only invite if we can somehow someway if true get an invite. But I guess if and when WKU leaves then they would only need 3 members.

From the SBC boards, looks like they are leaning towards Liberty a little.

1) the remaining sbc fan bases will all collectively pitch a huge fit. no one wants liberty. no one.
2) if the sbc is getting to the point where liberty is one of their top options, it means that they feel a need to add 5 teams and JMU continuously says no.
3) if jmu is saying no and liberty is saying yes, shame on us. we continue to make ourselves irrelevant with our lack of action while in state schools move ahead of us. you gotta love being the 5th cfb school in the state....

if they are adding liberty, they might as well add idaho instead. that is honestly a better option and they are already fbs.

I just don't see them adding Liberty unless they need to. If Liberty gets in, then kudos ro them.

I don't think Liberty gets in the SBC either, but it's just another rumor I've read.

Was it based on that thread started by a liberty fan? He claims he is hearing they're in the discussion from his source.
I have a hard time taking what he's saying seriously.

BTW, Troy AD stated that they want 4 for football. I am wondering if a football only invite would come JMU's way if the MAC and CUSA do not extend invites?

is this 4 for football with the expectation that wku is gone? that leaves the league with 11 fb schools, you might as well add a fifth.
I would say idaho is still ahead of us if we're not 100% gung-ho about joining the sbc. the fact that idaho is already fbs puts them well ahead of us in the pecking order.
Don't forget that liberty is waiting around, willing to take an invite in a heartbeat.

Congrats to GMU for getting into the A10, cannot say that about JMU. Oh well. Maybe we'll get a FBS invite soon.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
Complete administrative failure. Sorry, that's my opinion. We've watched 4 conference members bail and not so much as a peep out of our camp.
