JMU couldn't win a NC until Marshall and others moved up but carry on.

There's no comparison between football programs at all. App State isn't on Marshall's level either. Only difference is they will admit that.

You guys are a good program for the current FCS. I'm happy you are winning and actually root for you, but there's no comparison when it comes to JMU and Marshall/App St.

Let’s not act like Marshall was light years ahead of JMU when they were FCS. The last game between the two was a 28-21 OT win by Marshall at home in the FCS playoffs in 1994. Marshall was like NDSU back then as they never had to play an away playoff game including the championship game.

We haven't been FCS for almost 25 years and still have more FCS National Championships than JMU. It's hard telling how many we would have if we were still FCS.

"Mops for Props" and Marshall Reynolds booster $$$$$.
And the whole idea of fair competition, when being allowed to compete for the I-AA title WHILE transitioning to I-A, was ludicrous. They basically had a taxi squad to pick and choose from as they magically went from 63 to 85 schollies in one year. The David Ridpath book, "Tainted Glory", was quite enlightening about walking into the Marshall athletic department at that time.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
Here is the hard truth, JMU can't afford to move up.

Marshall didn't start winning until 1984, from 1964-1983 they didn't have 1 winning season. Most of that can be attributed to the 1970 plane crash but then again it was still 20 years. Marshall happen to be the losingest program of the 1970s (29 wins) and the winningest program of the 1990s (114 wins).

Since then JMU can't touch what Marshall has done on the field. If we were to compare the 2 programs Marshall would bury JMU 10x over, thats a fact.

If Marshall didn't move up when they did, they would have done what NDSU is doing now. The difference is we would have kept out bidding everyone and doing it at home. With 3 more years of Chad Pennington then 2 years of Byron Leftwich, 4 years of Stan Hill and 3 years of Barnard Morris that right there is 12 years of dominance.

Don’t forget Randy Moss. JMU is a lot younger football program than Marshall and App and we have done a phenomenal job especially the last 5-10 years taking the program to another level. We are ready and despite your nice win vs App we are pretty close to your level. That’s the eye ball test and the last 5 years performance on the field. I even bet our aggregate rankings over the last 5 years are on par or better than Marshall’s. The same way those Marshall teams in 1AA were at or above many 1A programs at the time. The same way Marshall moved without a transition year and won the Mac in their first year JMU is at that same level. It’s nice that you guys appear to be trending back up after flatlining for a while but let’s not forget you have been at it longer than us and let’s not ignore how good JMU is.

I'm still confused as to why big bad Marshall fans feel they need to prove their worth to the lowly FCS school they continuously say cant compare to them. It's one thing if this was on AGS where there's fans from multiple schools but you're coming on a JMU board with JMU fans.

It's nice you keep bringing up Randy Moss who was arguably the greatest wide receiver but he's been retired for some time. We can claim Charles Haley who up until two years ago had the most super bowl wins ever. Lets look at current NFL players - Marshall - 6 JMU - 7. Last I checked 7>6 but what do i know

Maybe the link above will help. Boise and Marshall are the only schools on that list that moved up prior to JMU’s first National Championship. And it’s not like Marshall was even remotely dominant in 1AA. Look I’m proud of you beating ASU one time this season, that’s cool. Marshall hasnt accomplished much since winning the CUSA title in 2014, although Doc has an incredible record in bowl games to save his a$$. Remember too that it’s a fair amount of hypocrisy here given how Marshall is the stuck in CUSA while all of its supposed peers moved on to AAC.

Go Herd!

We basically started in 1971 as we lost EVERYTHING in 1970.

I like JMU. I think you all are a good program and I respect what JMU has built. Hope you guys are able to move up one day as I think you would transition well. I also think you are more deserving of FBS than a lot of G5 teams/programs.

If Marshall was stupid enough to schedule JMU, we would kick them in the nuts.... if herders had nuts!

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
Smack talk is fun and why we have trolls on our board, where else can quarantined sports fans find non stop debating in a 25k posted debate about g5/fcs football?

The real question is not if JMU is better than ODU, Marshall, App State, Charlotte, Coastal, ECU, UVa, VT, UNC, Wake, Duke, NC State, Pitt or WV.

The real question is what is JMU's admin doing to get in the ring with the above mentioned programs in place of Norfolk State, Elon, Central Conn State, Colgate, Towson, New Hampshire, Chatt, Maine, VMI and Richmond.

Which group do we belong? We can claim for 100 years that we can beat Marshal, App or any other G5 and it means sh#t if we don't play our peer G5s with a sprinkle of P5s. JMU can't schedule the Liberty Flames!!! and Cignetti wanking with the assistant AD about scheduling being hard is just sad. Spending our time and money to travel to our palatial fcs stadium to see Norfolk State is hard coach. At least name names, what programs won't play JMU?

I agree with the first part of your post. The problem with the scheduling part is that you are painting with a broad brush. You are mentioning a Road game that happened several years ago and connecting it with scheduling today and specifically in a strange year during a pandemic.

Once conferences closed ranks which limited OOC games in a shortened season I think it’s pretty easy and logical to see that JMUs scheduling options were going to be limited.

The G5 regional schools were probably going to prefer playing each other to playing JMU. The regional FCS schools were likely going to prefer a pay day however small by playing a G5 or P5 and the P5 schools like the ACC were going to prefer playing an easier FCS school with their one OOC if they played an FCS school at all.

Who knows maybe UNC would have played JMU but if we had trouble scheduling any games around it or leading up to that game would it have been worth it for JMU to play that game. You want to give yourself the best chance to compete and win that game if you’re JMU. It isn’t about the pay day at this point in our program.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
only on a JMU board would this happen:

- we're better than Marshall
- evidence provided is one game from 1994
- Marshall laughs at us and points out the ridiculousness of it all
- JMU labels them trolls and pitiful for joining the discussion

I love JMU.

It would be to go FBS and play Marshall regularly.

Until our admin makes this happen (please, no excuses that "we don't have an invite") - we need to get over ourselves a bit.

Agree w u 97, this year is an outlier for every program. The scheduling problem is alive and well every year, we can't play our regional peers. It's years and years between dates with VT. We all love the annual 1A game hoping we can get a bounce or two and get the upset. Why not then admit we are playing in the wrong division? I get not lifting a leg on the CAA but that is not what I am saying, why not communicate to your alum base we are get it?

I hope that Bourne and JMU through this situation and others leading up to it have realized that we definitely do not fit with our current conference and aren’t on the same page. While the games are lined up for the next several years with the Va Techs Liberty’s and UNCs not to mention some decent FCS games vs Weber State and Monmouth I agree that scheduling will continue to be challenging for JMU at their current level and division. They are perhaps the least appealing type of program for anyone to schedule at this point.

I believe the two programs are just about as equal as you can get. People outside of your fan base will agree with me. I also believe if we were FBS, we'd be looked at pretty much the same way. Charlotte, ODU, GA State are different. Not really in a bad way, just different type schools and fan bases.

Program is more than one year....

Do you guys want to compare Heisman Finalists, Top 25 finishes, Top 10 finishes, amount of weeks ranked in Top 25, Bowl games, bowl wins etc etc?

I didn't think so. And that's not a knock on App. We have a headstart on you all in terms of FBS football.

I think in 2020, we are pretty even, as the game results last week showed. I would love to share a conference with App (and JMU).

No reason not to have a legit eastern based G5 conference right now. I truly think we could be the 2nd best G5 and even be the #1 G5 conference some years.

Marshall
App
Ga So
JMU

That's 4 very solid football PROGRAMS to build a new eastern based G5 conference around.

I honestly wouldn't care what other 6-8 teams were added to make 10-12 member conference (as long as they were in the East to keep a pretty tight footprint.)

That's high praise - especially when you consider the existing FBS schools in that footprint and not on the list. Thank you.
