No Hyper, what I said was you would be in FBS if the powers that be would have worked with the Belt. But your administration held out and the window for the time being closed. What did I say that was inaccurate?

If JMU wants to move up, then do it. You have the budget and the attendance. Dont get sore at me for your administration’s decisions. If you don’t have an invite, then go the Liberty route. Point to me where there is a spot right now for JMU to go other than Indy. For now.

I’ve followed you all for a long time.. since Mickey left Marshall. I know him and Kay and CM and MM. I wanted you all over ODU. Sorry it didn’t work out that way. Man, you are a bitter guy.

Do you honestly think the MEAC is going to lure a bunch of FBS teams to some fantasy conference with no MBB autobid and no cfp money? No. Not going to happen.

Let’s try having a civil conversation, shall we? Where is your window to get into FBS for now? AAC? Indy? Genuinely asking here.

JMU is the most desirable target for any entry-level G5 FB league right now (read: MAC, CUSA, SBC). If JMU’s leaders get the right invite, we’re gone. You bring these statements forward like a bunch of message board posters control JMU’s previous choice to spurn the Sun Belt. That’s part of what I don’t like about your recent contributions to our board. Your words & tone admonish JMU fans for actions we can’t control.

If you read our board, you know I’ve specifically advocated for an FBS Indy move if there’s no acceptable conference for us now. I think our admin is risk-averse to an extreme. I don’t think they like the idea of an FBS world where they can’t control the $$ as much via student fees. You’ve posted all about how JMU’s budget is subsidized heavily (as if that makes us less than Marshall). I don’t get how you don’t understand that you come off as a complete jack@ss when you bring that to our boards. Isn’t that how you have described YOURSELF?

There’s plenty of will for realignment & some change is coming soon. This whole “for now” nonsense ignores the reality of realignment. Things aren’t going to stay the way they are right now. So why pretend like it? I have no idea what’s likely or not with a new east coast FBS league, whether it’s ASun, Big South, UAC or MEAC. Dismissing it all outright seems equally as crazy as the David St & NoDak theories. I don’t care if you, Mickey & Kay were all best friends. It doesn’t really make you any sort of JMU expert. I’m not bitter, I’m hyper. It’s in my name for god’s sake.

Duke Dog is not anti-FBS. He likely remembers like I do that Georgia State not being able to compete with other CAA football teams. They were 1-7 in the conference the one year they played in the CAA. In 10 years of football, their best seasons were 7-5, 7-6 and 6-5. Hardly stellar.

Georgia State is not a school on my radar as a desirable conference partner nor do I see them offering any “branding” opportunity as a conference member either. Charlotte and Georgia State are a lot alike to me. Both located in large cities with little fan following. Between pro football and the allegiance of college fans to P5 schools in their state, there is very little interest in these schools athletics programs and their ceiling is very low.

App and ECU offer infinitely more than Charlotte can with a much larger upside. Georgia Southern is > Georgia State too.

I like Marshall as a conference partner. UD has potential. They are spending money but their programs have had limited success over the last decade. This has led to a deteriorating fan base which at one time was more supportive than JMU’s.

You didn’t say anything I disagree with. I also remember them stinking up the CAA. (It wasn't very long ago. I suspect most JMU fans remember.) But the point is we ignore the horrible football attendance numbers for schools in the CAA, while attempting to hold potential future conference mates to a higher standard. It lacks logic.

They were also just 1 example of 5 potential flagship or state named schools. There's no need to get hung up on one example. No school is going to bring a name, attendance, and national brand. If they did they'd be in a P5 or at least the AAC.

Agree. You can see those posters’ agenda clearly as an outsider, I would think. I thought your list was a good one. While maybe Georgia State isn’t our ideal conference mate, that doesn’t mean your classification of which schools would make a successful new conference are invalid. Perhaps they should be flipped in order to show real fan support is more important than a school’s name having their state in it. Otherwise, I think it’s a good list of traits for a potential future conference.

I should have mentioned I was just listing criteria and it wasn't in order of importance. Truth be told, fan support and atmosphere is probably the biggest criteria for securing a good TV deal. The empty stadiums of C-USA show you the channels and money no crowds will get you.

Get as many schools who fill the stadium as you can. Fill out the rest with state flagships, state or city named schools. And of course Army who checks a few boxes.

That's my dream anyway.

exactly. it's typical of the world right now. Take a comment from someone else and fill in the blanks on your own for them.

the MU guy was speculating on who he would want to be in this mythical new conference. I'm simply stating my OPINION (does anyone in the world remember what that is anymore?) that i prefer to be aligned with schools that support programs, not schools that have a "name" or "market".

that strategy has already proven to be an adjunct failure at the G5 level. 90% of members in those leagues want to get out of them and will jump at the first opportunity to do so. The 10% resides in the MAC who has seen very little conference movement in 30 years and appears the most happy and stable of all them. why do you think that is?

In an FBS league, i would not want Georgia State in a league with JMU. Not over a half dozen other schools who i would like better, other than the obvious ones like MU, ODU, App State, etc. My criteria is to be with regional schools who have shown a sustained ability to support their programs. Georgia State does not fit that bill IMO. The days of "cable TV" markets dominating TV contracts are over. the last round of deals has proven that. Not when in the future a guy in Atlanta will have the same access to watching games from his couch as a guy in Edgehill, Georgia (smallest city in the state).

Give me schools that i KNOW will bring in 20-30,000 per game. That looks good on TV/streaming. That is what will help the league grow. Georgia State games look hideous with less than 10,000 actual people in the stands of a stadium that was built way to big for them.

this conversation is about FBS regional league makeup, NOT where we are in FCS right now.

We agree about Georgia State specifically, although where I THINK we differ is how they compare to our current situation. I’m accustomed to folks making cracks about GA State or Charlotte attendance while not being vocal about our current CAAF mates with trash attendance. So I deduct (right or wrong) that the same people are anti-FBS for JMU. And to me, people who claim to be pro-FBS but only for the exact perfect conference aren’t really pro-FBS. They’re pro-status quo. A perfect conference situation is as unlikely to occur as winning the lottery. GA State would be a fine football conference-mate. Would they be our favorite? Probably not.

We don’t ignore the lack of support from our CAA partners. You are correct that it exists. We just don’t see the value in being G5 with a bunch of schools that will eventually go bankrupt trying to create demand that isn’t there.

Northeastern and Hofstra discontinued football due to its cost and lack of fan support. What makes you confident many G5’s won’t do the same given its higher price tag?

We want FBS but see what is presently available i.e. Indy as a down grade.

The present CAA offers more stability and the JMU fan interest for the league and playoff system is still there. Look at what has happened to UD. They were winning/competing in NCs at one time. They fired Keeler and fan interest started to decline along with their aging stadium. Let’s hope the stadium upgrades pump life back into their program because I see them as a good rival.

Why can’t CAA football be the new east coast conference?

Why can’t CAA football be the new east coast conference?

Because there are 1 or 2 schools at best outside of JMU that could make the jump to FBS within 5 years. Many of the others have poor facilities and fan support. The conference as a whole has also proven they are unwilling to invest like we do in media production, etc. We are like a whale in a swimming pool eating goldfish. Time to move to the ocean.

Your point about fan interest in the CAA is a good one. We are saying CUSA and SB have the same problem. I would like to see schools in our region that have fan interest come together in a new conference. With Covid-19, now is the time to make it happen as the NCAA is more likely to support the formation of a new league for financial reasons. At least I hope they would.

ECU, App, ODU, JMU, MU, UD, Navy, Temple and Liberty is a heck of a league and all schools have legitimate fan support. If the West coast teams would leave the AAC, this could happen. Add VCU and George Mason for basketball only and you have a home run. All large schools with solid fan followings.

Yes it is fantasy but there is no denying it would be an attractive league for fans and therefore attractive for TV.

CAA upgrading to FBS is much less likely than Ga State or Charlotte going bankrupt.

And I appreciate the acknowledgment that a lot of our CAAF partners have horrible attendance. I just see certain people making consistent comments about attendance at the G-State & Charlottes but never speak similarly about the trash in the CAAF.

Ah, but that's a Dukes Domain tradition, going back at least to 2003ish. Doesn't matter how solid a point is made, or how interesting an idea is. The weakest part will get bludgeoned and the rest barely discussed-as if a perfect scenario really exists.

I haven’t admonished JMU for anything except to point out that a heavily subsidized budget is not ideal. But it is what it is and money is money. But a large budget doesn’t automatically translate into success (see ODU). Now, do I think JMU is in a far better position to move up? You bet.

Secondly, I have never blamed fans. Think that all you want, but it just isn’t true. I do agree with you about your admin from what Ive read here.

I also agree some form of realignment will take a place eventually, but there is a contract in place among all ten FBs conferences until mid decade so I highly doubt anything will happen until then, hence, the “for now” thought. If JMU wants to act before then and go Indy, or approach the MAC or re-establish a relationship with the Belt, then more power to you.

No one from Marshall that I have seen is against JMU moving up.

The irony of you posting “Move on” is that I had no plans to post on it further. You can always mute me if you don’t like the frequency of my posts.

My point is your comments on a JMU message board to “go ahead and move up” are literally directed at fans who can’t force the hand of our admin. Maybe I’m just being bogged down in minutiae but it really comes across that way from my perspective.
