It's not the only way to correct the problem but........ If we have to vote for 30 or 60 days to ensure that no one has to wait for 8 hours in a line. Then that is EXACTLY what we need to do.
THey do.

Torch - I am stunned that you would laugh at voter suppression. Is it only liberals who cling to their right to vote?
I actually am a bit shocked at the GOP's war on voting. I am glad it backfired. It energized the democratic base and even many independents in swing states. The last polls in NOVA closed around 10:30 or 11 with so many people in line. Local news was talking to some and they said they were ambivalent but after watching the GOP's intent to turn Florida into a 3rd world nation - they felt they had to demonstrate their right to vote.
I for one think that congress needs to pass laws for f= federal elections to enable early voting, reduce the time it takes to vote, and make it easier to vote. The GOP did not help their brand.

You weren't joking? I mean it was already proven deductively that "suppression" is a complete fabrication, and yet you're calling for jailtime.
Quote:Is it only liberals who cling to their right to vote?
I voted. I'm just clinging to the concept of actual citizens having a right to vote.
And what "right" is this? Maybe it should be looked at as an earned privilige. The founding fathers knew that not everybody had a "right" to vote.

Today in GOP Voter Suppression
I waited four hours to vote at my precinct in a racially and economically mixed precinct in the District of Columbia (yes, they do exist, and in increasing numbers).
It's not a scam, DC is a democratically controlled State/jurisdiction. At the same time, poorer jurisdictions tend not to have the resources needed to run efficient voting operations. We had one voting machine, and three ballot clerks. The lack of preparation in a densely populated precinct was astounding. I have a job that gives me a lot of leeway with my billable hours. I was able to use my smartphone to cancel/move my morning meetings.
But what of the cashier at Target? The line cook at Five Guys? Anyone in the large number of non-union jobs with little to no guaranteed benefits cannot simply say, "well, I'll wait in line" if they are choosing between voting and keeping their job.
Early voting is a lifeline to these folks. When it was introduced, it was intended in many cases to make voting easier for the highly educated voters who knew how, where, and when to take advantage of it. Beginning in 2008, Democrats began a GOTV campaign focusing on getting their low propensity, economically marginal voters to vote early. When it was apparent that it was paying off for Democrats, GOP election officials moved to curtail it.
There are structural issues at play here that make early voting the only viable way to ensure that many voters (disproportionately democratic) have an equal opportunity to vote. In general, we should be making voting easier in this country, not harder. And in general, Republicans should focus on improving their pitch to disadvantaged voters, rather than trying to make it harder for them to vote.
Just my $.02, I realize this board and most Internet sports forums are GOP centric and won't agree with my POV here.

RE: Today in GOP Voter Suppression
All you need to do in order to understand where right-wingers are coming from is to ask them whether they believe that every eligible American should cast a ballot. The answer is almost universally "no" from the righties. They don't want more people voting because their arguments can't win in the free market of ideas, so they want more restrictions and regulations to shrink the voting population.

Maybe in the right wing echo chamber.

Since the founding fathers, the right to vote has been extended to include other humanoids like minorities and women. For those that are eligible to vote, then Yes, I see it as a right to vote.

Nope, as I was waiting in line people were talking about it; if someone could wait 9 hours, so could we. On the news as people in NOVA were interviewed some of them said something similar.
The voter suppression backfired - people who may have stayed home came out for revenge.

So people who think other people's right to vote might be suppressed came out to vote for revenge for a perceived possible slight and otherwise they would have stayed home? And people say the left is dumb.

RE: Today in GOP Voter Suppression
Anyone who is blase about any attempt to curtail another Americans right to vote for political reasons is an abhorrent person and a bad american. It is the single most important right we are granted in this nation, and is paramount to any other as without it, those would soon vanish. If we can't, as a nation, point in derision and disgust at those who are purposefully making it more difficult for citizens to vote so as to hopefully influence an election, what good is our constitution?
It's f*cking despicable the ease in which some of you brush this off. But you know what? If it changes, I would never wish that upon any of you and would fight against it, because that's the whole d@mn point of this crazy little experiment we've got going. Somethings are more important than wanting your guy to win.
