Whelp...
We knew this year was gonna be hard.

This year was hard.

3-9 is not "sooner than you think"

HOWEVER

"sooner than you think" is NOT OVER YET.

"sooner than you think" includes season 2 (but not season 3).

Coach can either deliver on an actual promise NEXT YEAR or suffer his first defeat on a stated aim.

Astounding Coaches can pull rabbits out of the hat from nothing in the first year. Coach is not an "astounding coach".

Better coaches can surprise in year two from a disastrous ground floor.

Good coaches can get things turned around in three years from a start in the ditch.

Fair coaches take 4 years.

No coach should get a 5th year having not done anything to the point.

I think coach is a "Better Coach" still.

I guess we'll see next year...

I would like for him to do his homework on a starting QB in the off season. I am sure he has been doing what he can with what he has and will continue to do so, but we have to improve at the position or we are gonna continue to struggle.

Hrmm...one nitpick: McGee may actually BE an outstanding (don't know if your spelling was intentional) coach, you can't make that call right now. There was more than genetics that went into making a Michael Jordan...not to mention a process of many, many years. Look up any coach's career path that fits the "outstanding" definition and I think that for the vast majority you'll discover "Year 0" (when they became "The Man" at any level for the first time) happened earlier and in much more obscurity than would be predicted because the results were mediocre or forgettable.

"sooner than you think" depends on who "you" is...i think its a little egocentric to assume that your version applies to everybody

Nah. I feel pretty comfortable calling anyone who thought he was in a position to work miracles THIS YEAR a fool.

but if somebody thought it would take 4 years, than 3 years is "sooner than he/she thinks"...but thanks for defining everybody's thoughts for them

plus, if you look back at the preseason prediction thread, many people (perhaps even a majority of the posters) did expect much more this season...so i guess the majority here are fools, according to you

Hoping for more this year, knowing that it was possible that catching a few breaks would make a couple of more wins possible, is not the same as expecting it.

i was talking about "predicting" not "hoping"
i agree that theres a big difference between "hoping for" and "expecting." however, i do not think theres a very big difference between "predicting" and "expecting."

If 6 wins is a miracle I guess I am a fool because I thought this team was capable of 6 wins at best. Looking back it was. It just didn't get there. If the bounce of an oblong ball determines if one is a fool or not this place is full of fools just like me.

It's an internet chat board. By definition, it's full of fools.

At the start of the year, I broke our schedule out into a few groups:
The guaranteed losses(USC, OSU, Tulsa)
The games we had a chance in, but more often than not we'd lose(ECU, Marshall, Houston, UCF)
The games I'd say we were 50/50 or better to win.(USM, Tulane, Memphis, SELA, Troy)

By simply looking at it this way, I assumed 7 wins was the ceiling for this team. Because we are UAB, I assumed we would win at least one of the middle games, and lose at least one of the bottom games. Obviously, UAB played very well against Tulsa and ECU, but those moral victories don't count at the end of the season. All in all, I feel this was a pretty fair assessment before the season, and suggesting this team could get to 6-6 before the season was fair. A few bounces here and there, and this team could have been 6-6. Showing up for the Memphis and Tulane games also would have helped.

I think those who were legitimately predicting a record much beyond 6-6 before the season were buying into McGee's hype too much. I know I kept bringing it up before the season, and it irritated some on here, but there was just too much going against the team this year to have any kind of real success. I think next year is going to be tough as well, but the team will be much more experienced. I just hope McGee finds a way to a Bowl Game, because if he doesn't people are going to start wondering if he's simply all talk.

Right now I would say that he is all recruit, which is a good start.

He sees a few areas where we can improve as well & appears to be hitting it right off the bat.
