Technology has affected the way we view games today. Back in the 80's and early 90's TV wasn't much of an option; you either listen to the game on radio or went to the game. Now we have 60 inch HD TVs that make viewing a game at home an event of sorts. Or you can watch a game on your computer and not deal with parking and traffic headaches.

And I think UAB Football has hurt UAB Basketball although that was not the intent in the beginning.
