RE: Maryland leaving ACC
With Pitt and Syracuse joining the ACC, I think BC can find a rival or two.

I can see us taking the South Florida rise through the ranks but this new round of realignment is too soon. I was expecting it to be calm for at least 6-10 years.

I agree, but it will take years for the dust to settle. I think the midterm goal(5-10 years) should be to fall somewhere with the old guard CUSA. It will take a successful transition and a respectable stadium. The good news is we don't have to worry about having no market.

This will have a bigger impact, Boise State, San Diego State and BYU are talking about rejoining the Mountain West. What happens if the Big East loses Rutgers, UConn, Boise and SDSU. Houston has an out if the money isn't right too.

I'm happy we're in CUSA and we don't have to worry about whether or not our admin will make the jump to FBS. But with the limited value of mid-major TV contracts and the ever-increasing travel costs, regional conferences are the way to go. They helps foster better rivalries, which IMO are the key to any successful conference. So, considering that, a merger between the western teams of the nBE and CUSA with the MWC and a merger between the east of the nBE and CUSA would be ideal (and would make for some awesome match-ups). But this makes way too much sense for it to ever happen, not to mention that some of the presidents/boards/programs would be too good* for this conference.

East Merger:
ODU
ECU
Charlotte
Marshall
USM
UAB
Tulane
La Tech
FIU
Temple
USF
UCF
Memphis
Cincinnati
Navy
Louisville (assuming only UConn is poached by the ACC)

West Merger:
Air Force
Boise State
SDSU
Colorado St
New Mexico
UNLV
Wyoming
Fresno
Nevada
Hawaii
SJSU
Utah St.
UTEP
UTSA
UNT
Tulsa

That would be the ideal scenario. I like both of those lineups.

First the BE lost AQ bowl status (along with every other conference,) now they are part of the "gang of five" conferences which all have an equal, albeit slim chance of gaining entree to the National Championship playoffs. It seems to me that the BCS conferences have effectively distanced themselves from the biggest threat to their money by taking these actions. The "gang of five" was thrown a bone, bridging the gap between the BE and the other four former "non aq" conferences. The BE will now be in there w/the rest of us fighting over the scraps.

With the impending loss of Rutgers, and possible losses of the new adds (BSU, SDSU, UH, etc,) and possible further losses to backfill the ACC (UConn) the BE will be looking almost exclusively for MARKET SIZE in order to maintain their one advantage which is media payout. If the new adds in the west decide to go back to the MWC the BE will scramble to add teams within top 50 markets. With all due respect to the great ECU and USM programs, they will do nothing to protect the BE's only advantage.

RE: Maryland leaving ACC
Tulane is joining the Big East. An announcement is expected this afternoon. Maybe this means that ECU is not really wanted by the Big East and that they are staying put for now.
