This team has 65 1st and 2nd year players, a ton of injuries in the defensive backfield, and lost their best defensive player to a career ending injury. Still held Rutgers to 10 points and had a chance to pull it out until late. Hated losing this one, but still have a chance to get a 10 win season. This Rutgers team is pretty damn good. I expect them to kick Lousyville's as$.

Excellent post.

Looking at the big picture, this team is actually overachieving this year. Imagine how next year is going to be...

Although the coaching and the QB position are big question marks, I'm still hopeful that a bright future is in store for the UC football program.

Bingo.

We are 7-3 and this was a transition year.

I think we may have seen today why CBJ was patient with Munchie.

We are going to be very very good next year...if...and a big if, we can field a decent QB. I'd hoped that this season would allow a new QB to get experience in a transition year but it didn't happen with Munchie and Kay will be gonzo next year. It's going to all come down to whether someone can step up and be a consistently good QB next year. We don't need great, just good.

And we aren't regressing as a program to the minter years either. Kelly was lightening in a bottle. CBJ is a very good coach and he's got a very capable coaching staff. We got beat because we don't have a good enough QB right now, our O line was poor and we came up against a very good defense. I sat in front of some deranged loon who was screaming for butch to go to UK and seemed to think we are alabama or something and BCS bowls are a birthright every season. People need to chill, stay behind the team and be rational about the team we have (thats a very respectable 7-3) and keep an eye towards what we can be next year.

I guess I am having trouble taking solace in 7-3 when 2 of those are FCS wins. We basically have 5 wins against teams with a combined record of 22-30.

Again, I am not trying to pile on or complain, I just am looking for an HONEST assessment of where we are headed.

If we don't step on our own weenie the next two weeks we will be 9-3 and heading to likely the Belk Bowl in Charlotte.

With this supposedly being a very young team, I would think we are heading in a good direction if we can upgrade at QB and on both lines of scrimmage.

I don't really get the animosity with the QB play today. He played well for his second start, he even showed improvement with the shorter throws from what I could tell.

Observations from the game.

1. Rutgers was just better than UC. They easily won the line of scrimmage battle and that is mainly how they won the game.
2. The few opportunities UC had they wasted. Kay overthrew a wide open receiver in the end zone. The 4th and 6 inches play call was not a good call in my opinion. Just run a QB sneak - Kay is a big boy.
3. Miliano's early miss hurt.

In a close, low scoring game like this was, you just can't waste opportunities.

Anyone else worry that the Belk Bowl may get nudged by the ACC to take Syracuse over us? Wouldn't be the first time they passed us up.

Expectations do change sometimes when you see what you're up against.

Perhaps the message is to temper excitement when you beat the likes of Fordham and Delaware State and not jump off a bridge when you lose to an 8-1 Rutgers.

What excitement? Hard to have any with this staff. And I was certainly not one of those with their head in the sand when we couldn't even beat up on FCS teams.

I agree, why get excited about Bearcat football when you can just b*tch about it 24/7?

Oh sorry, I thought this was a discussion board and not a circle-jerk.

Critical thought and certain opinions are discouraged by a select few round here anymore. Tell em' to piss off and speak your heart.

This is exactly what I saw. Milano has to hit the chip shot. If he does, we are down by one score late. The fourth and inches: why do we always run out of the shot gun. If Kay lines up behind the center, than he is a threat to sneak. In the shotgun, the defense only needs to key on Winn. In addition, in the 2nd or third quarter, Kay, who was under pressure, missed a wide open Kelce. The camera panned out and I did not see anyone within 20 yards of him. Lastly, Rutgers won the line of scrimmage today. RDA was totally ineffective running the ball. Our receivers did not make plays against their athletic dbs. I saw many positives. Blair is a beast. Winn is difficult to tackle. The defense held Rutgers to ten eventhough they were on the field all day long. I did not think this was a very good day of play calling. It is still fun.

Just got back. That 4th and inches call made me lose ALL faith in Butch Jones. Is this guy ******* retarded? Stop trying to reinvent the ******* wheel and get the first down. Oh and the complete opposite problem in the first half, they had no problem letting ******* Munchie sling the ball where ever but they wouldn't let Kay open anything up.

I don't believ ein Butch Jones anymore. Thank god it's bball season.

That mean old Butchie, holding poor little Brendon back from his rightful glory. I seem to remember 2 picks and nearly a third when he did "let" him "sling" the ball. Pretty hard to "open it up" when you're running for your life or flat on your back. Good grief.

It's true, I'm just really pissed after the game. This season feels like one gigantic missed opportunity. I should go back to not caring about college football.

Not a Butch fan? Check yourself. I had his back against all comers in 2010. And there were a lot around here who didn't understand how messed up that roster was. This one is light years better.

If I don't think this has been a great job on the sidelines in 2012 (and I don't), its ok if I say so. Some folks think criticism is akin to hatin'. Its not.
