If any one here has spent some time in Germany especially around the holidays you also need a good Glühwein (Hot spiced wine) recipe.
3/4 cup orange juice
3/4 cup white sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange
10 whole cloves
1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine
Directions
1. In a saucepan, combine the orange juice, sugar, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer.
2. Cut the orange in half, and squeeze the juice into the simmering water. Push the cloves into the outside of the orange peel, and place peel in the simmering mixture. Continue simmering for 30 minutes, until thick and syrupy.
3. Pour in the wine, and heat until steaming but not simmering. Remove the clove-studded orange halves. Serve hot in mugs or glasses that have been preheated in warm water (cold glasses will break.)
Glühwein is popular at the Christkindl Markts

This sounds awesome and I am going to make it for tomorrow's tailgate. What Red wine do you think would be best (obviously I am going cheap, but I Merlot, Shiraz, etc?)?

Mark,
It comes down to personal taste, for me I like cabernet... nothing "oakey"... sweet/fruity would work best in my opinion.

I think Merlot and Shiraz would both work equally well. The Trader Joes - Charles Shaw Shriraz is perfect for a mixed recipe like that and very cheap.
BTW - the key is not overheating. Think coffee serving temperature if you are simmering you are boiling off all your alcohol.

One drink combo that someone showed me a few years ago was eggnog and baileys irish cream. Actually pretty tasty

I think I might try that one this week too Crew - sounds like a winner. I am a big fan of clove and cinnamon. and What is not to like about Cab, Merlot, Shiraz etc.
