Mayor Bloomberg bans food donations
No, not because of food contamination, but because the city can’t properly assess salt, fat and fiber in donated food and thereby ensure starving people are getting the optimal levels of nutrition.

RE: Mayor Bloomberg bans food donations
You know... I seriously thought it was just due to the fact that they couldn't guarantee "safe" foods (Non-tainted/non-drugged/etc.) . I honestly didn't think NY'ers are that stupid...

But they put the very lines in the original article

Quote:In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters. Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.

Quote:DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers. A new interagency document controls what can be served at facilities — dictating serving sizes as well as salt, fat and calorie contents, plus fiber minimums and condiment recommendations.

So NY'ers keep this idiot around because.... ????

I understand that the Liberty crowd around here is pretty small but I can't imagine that even the most liberal of us would agree with this.

Mean while you can't get a cop to drive past a donut shop without stopping. Anyway, I'm OK with this because it means my friends in NJ will get more. I wonder what his thoughts are on Nathan's famous hot dogs or the dirty water dog vendors that are all over the city?

Alabama Power had linemen who were turn away in NJ because they weren't from a union shop. This is not to indite the entire NE as the the guys from Alabama were able to help out in NY, but these are the kind of results one gets from 'standing on principle.'

Ironic that Bloomberg became Mayor because he carried Staten Island by nearly 80% (by 61,000 votes), while losing the rest of NYC by a slight margin. Maybe Mark Green or whoever would've done just as bad, but I doubt Bloomberg would even get 20% in Staten Island now.

A trucking company that I work with occasionally send trucks to NY to help. The had to sign a temporary union agreement, pay dues, and put a paid union man in the passenger seat to ride along with the driver. The union man didn't work, just rode along instead of driving his own truck and helping to clean up that mess. There is no end to the amount of stupidity that is in office up there. But hey, everything is okay, Obama promised to cut through all the red tape to help out.
How's that working out?

I am not a Bloomberg fan.

If the food is safe to eat then let people eat it. The guy refused FEMA to come in before the storm.

Uhm.. you sure dc . I"ve never seen a retraction from the original story. The Alabama Power guys were turned away from one neighborhood, though the original story said they went home. The last part I don't believe, the first half I do.

I think the original story was denied by both the company and the NJ unions. There is a documented case out there somewhere about a crew stopping in VA on the way to help because they couldnt reach an agreement with the local union. I don't feel like looking it up though.
