RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
Just my 2 cents on everyone picking us to beat UCF and Charleston. They both have Centers who can dominate the paint. Keith Clanton and Adjehi Baru.

Those will be absolute steals if we can win those games.

Agreed, which is why I have us losing the Charlston game. I think we get back the home court mojo at the Ted this year and squeak by UCF. I have us at 24-6, but picked VCU and UVA as wins. Those could go the other way, but I refuse to pick them as such. I don't think the UVA game will be a road game. Anyone there that is NOT for UVA will be pulling for us. We should have GMU, UR, and casual local Richmond/VCU fans in our corner. Should be truly neutral.

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
Overall- 22-8
CAA- 13-5

11/09/12- Holy Cross W
11/10/12- Morgan State W
11/11/12- UTSA W

11/17/12- @ Cleveland State W
11/21/12- VMI W
11/24/12- @ Murray State L
12/01/12- @ W&M W
12/04/12- Richmond W
12/07/12- VCU L
12/14/12- UCF W
12/18/12- @ Charleston W
12/22/12- * UVA L
12/29/12- Fairfield W

1/02/13- James Madison W
1/05/13- Delaware W
1/10/13- @ George Mason L
1/16/13- @ UNCW W
1/19/13- Georgia State W
1/26/13- @ James Madison W
1/30/13- Towson W
2/02/13- @ Georgia State W
2/04/13- George Mason W
2/07/13- @ Drexel L
2/09/13- Northeastern W
2/11/13- @ Delaware L
2/16/13- W&M W
2/20/13- UNCW W
2/23/13- @ Hofstra W
2/18/13- Drexel L
3/02/13- @ Northeastern L

I see ODU going 22-8 (13-5) T2 or 3rd in the CAA another top 4 finish surprise surprise. If they overachieve I see maybe 24-6 if a few balls don't bounce their way 20-10ish. Sounds like the backcourt is as loaded as ever, but defense and rebounding are the question marks. I'm thinking that those two things being the weak points could be a good thing seeing as those are Blaine's specialties. By the end of the year ODU could be very tough, improving on D and rebounding, plus everyone just gaining experience.

Hopefully the Hill we saw in the first exhibition is just a preview of things to come. I was thinking this year would be a BIG year for him. Last year he was still a new guy, and didn't even have a full season to really get comfortable. I'm expecting him to be the all around player he was in high school moving forward. ODU will need Hill to help out on the boards, handling and passing the ball. Batten and Bacote take a little pressure off of Donte scoring the ball, Painter provides a guy that keeps defenses honest down low. Nick can draw one big away from the basket, and Ross will provide the athleticism and some crowd pleasing plays. If Palmore can control the ball, and the tempo fairly well, then there's no reason this team can't make a run at the tourney. Just gotta figure out who on the bench can provide some solid minutes here and there.

We are going to have to deal with a 7 deep rotation with Anton coming it at #8 as minimally as possible. Other than problems in foul trouble situations, this might not be a bad thing. We don't have the personnel for the hockey substitution strategy.

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
I would think it would be more of an 9 man rotation with the starters being

Palmore
Batten
Hill
Wright
Painter

Bench: Bacote, Clark, Ross, Anton

Doesn't sound too bad to me. Lot of youth, but other than that I don't mind any of those guys seeing many minutes. There's only 200 minutes to go around I'd say the breakdown should be something like this.

Palmore 24
Batten 26
Hill 28
Wright 26
Painter 26
Ross 22
Bacote 22
Clark 16
Anton 10

Obviously McEwen could get a rotation here and there, so that will change it a little. And I guess Clark could possibly redshirt, but I'm not sure how. Anachebe redshirts for sure, which is a great thing, he will be a beast in 4 years.

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
I'll take a stab at it:

Overall 20-10
CAA Play 12-6

11/09/12- Holy Cross W
11/10/12- Morgan State W
11/11/12- UTSA W
11/17/12- @ Cleveland State L
11/21/12- VMI W
11/24/12- @ Murray State L
12/01/12- @ W&M W
12/04/12- Richmond W
12/07/12- VCU W
12/14/12- UCF L
12/18/12- @ Charleston L
12/22/12- * UVA W
12/29/12- Farfield W
1/02/13- James Madison W
1/05/13- Delaware W
1/10/13- @ George Mason L
1/16/13- @ UNCW W
1/19/13- Georgia State W
1/26/13- @ James Madison W
1/30/13- Towson W
2/02/13- @ Georgia State L
2/04/13- George Mason W
2/07/13- @ Drexel L
2/09/13- Northeastern W
2/11/13- @ Delaware L
2/16/13- W&M W
2/20/13- UNCW W
2/23/13- @ Hofstra L
2/18/13- Drexel W
3/02/13- @ Northeastern L

I will also note this is more of a worst case scenario in my eyes. I wouldn't be suprised to see 3-6 more wins than what I predicted.

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
If we break the 20 win plateau, even in a HORRIBLE CAA this year, I will consider it one of Taylor's better coaching jobs. We have no front court depth whatsoever and are horrible undersized.

You guys are awfully optimistic after one preseason game against a D2 school. I'll wait and see what our freshman guards do against experienced CAA backcourts before I start thinking a 20 win season is possible.

Just for the hell of it......

16-14
11-7 in the CAA

No postseason at all, to challenging an OOC schedule for such a young team.

Liberty Tax Tourney (@ TED)
11/09/12- Morgan State W Should win
11/10/12- Holy Cross W Should win but will be much tougher than most people think, ex ODU asst. Milan Brown is now their coach.
11/11/12- UTSA W This is a very iffy prediction. I'm giving us the benefit of the doubt for being at home but UTSA is a solid team and will probably give our young guys trouble this early in the season. We always struggle early.

11/17/12- @ Cleveland State L Highly doubt we win our first road game with such a young team.
11/21/12- VMI W We should win in a run and gun game but you never know with VMI, if they hit their 3's, they can make it tough.
11/24/12- @ Murray State L No chance in hell we win this game
12/01/12- @ W&M W First road CAA test, could be tough, giving us the benefit of the doubt again on sheer skill but the Tribe will be in this game the whole way and if it comes down to a FT shooting contest, watch out because the Tribe will win that all day every day
12/04/12- Richmond L Too much muscle and the Princeton offense will give our freshman nightmares to defend. Really do not see us winning this game with an undisciplined young team that is also undersized. We will get screen and rolled to death.
12/07/12- VCU L No chance. We have a freshman PG going against that press. I'd give anything to see us win this game but just do not see it happening.
12/14/12- UCF L Beef and more beef....they push us around and more than likely blow us out much like they did last year.
12/18/12- @ Charleston L They shoot the ball very well. It'll be interesting to see how they do without Cremins. Unfortunately for us, they replaced him with a very good coach in Doug Wojcik. They return 4 starters from a solid team last year and they are very tough to beat at home in that loud arena of theirs. Don't see us getting it done on the road but honestly, I think this is our best shot at an OOC road win. This or Cleveland State.

12/22/12- *UVA L (@ Richmond Coliseum) No chance. Too much size, experience and coaching. Just hope we don't embarrass ourselves. It sucks we are finally getting UVA on a neutral court in such a down year. Bummer.
Governor's Invitational

12/29/12- Fairfield W A tough home game but alot of that beef that beat us up last year is gone. Rakim Sanders and Ryan Oleander (the 7 footer) are both gone. This will be another tough one, but I think we get our revenge at home.
1/02/13- James Madison W Hopefully we beat JMU at home, if not, yikes.
1/05/13- Delaware W This is going to be a very tough game. Delaware is solid this year. Could go either way on this one.
1/10/13- @ George Mason L Not a chance in hell. Even our best teams don't win at GMU. We might as well just forfit and spend the extra time getting ready for UNCW on the road lol.
1/16/13- @ UNCW W Tough place to play but if we are going to win anywhere on the road this year, this would be the place to do it because this team is just flat out terrible.
1/19/13- Georgia State W Another tough game. Ga state will give us a game at home. Another toss up but edge goes to us at home.
1/26/13- @ James Madison W Could be tough to come away from Harrisonburg with a W. I gave us the sweep over them but it won't be easy.
1/30/13- Towson W Towson is going to be much better than people think but hopefully we can beat them at home.
2/02/13- @ Georgia State L They get us in the rematch in Atlanta.
2/04/13- George Mason L Went both ways with this one because they have holes too but GMU has more experience so I give them the sweep over us. I think we can win this game though, it'll just come down to our FT and 3 point shooting. Another toss up.
2/07/13- @ Drexel L No chance.
2/09/13- Northeastern W Should win at home, Northeastern is still is rebuilding mode as well but could be a sneaky tough team.
2/11/13- @ Delaware L Don't see us winning the rematch in Delaware. They will beat us up on in their 3/4 empty gym.
2/16/13- W&M W Should definitely win this game at home
2/20/13- UNCW W Easiest game of the year on the schedule
2/23/13- @ Hofstra W Tough one.....we could easily lose this game in NY. Gave us the benefit of the doubt here.
2/28/13- Drexel L Again, no chance. We just don't have the horses this year. Way to thin inside.
3/02/13- @ Northeastern L The Drexel game takes a lot out of us and we drop our last game of the SEASON on the road in Boston.

No CAA tourney games and thus, no postseason basketball. A lost season. Too bad we can't let Painter sit out a year so he is ready to go when we get to CUSA but man, that would just make way too much sense. Let's just be mediocre both years instead!

I can see the non-conference losses from a pessimistic POV, but I think you are giving the CAA way too much credit. The league is going to absolutely blow this year aside from Drexel. I doubt GMU even finishes in the top 100. This might be the worst CAA we've ever seen. It is so bad, some people are picking Delaware. Also, you keep talking about being too thin. Have you seen DeShawn Painter yet? The kid is an absolute beast of a body and is going to be the biggest big man in the CAA aside from McCoy. As long as we stay out of foul trouble enough to keep the frontline rotation at Painter-Wright-Ross and don't have to play Larsen significantlty, we will be fine up front. Not dominant like we have been, but we will be able to hold our own.

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
In today's college basketball environment, it's completely possible to compete without big man depth, and win big with guards and wings. That hasn't been the Monarch way ... we'll see if we can adjust.

20-10:

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
UVA lost a ton to graduation. They have a SR PG of avg ability, who has been overrecurited by their incoming class. They have 6 true freshman on their roster and one red shirt freshman, and 4 sophomores. They aren't near as experienced as some might think.

Out biggest weakness is they have a ton of guys 6-8 or bigger. They can play us very physical, wear us down, get us in foul trouble up front.

But this is a winable game.

I'm going with 17-13.
And I won't be upset about it. I'm just going to sit back and watch the young guys learn and develop.

Very possible scenario, although I really think this OOC schedule is fit for a young team to succeed. No Georgetowns, no Xaviers, no Missouris...Murray State is tough, but I think we can take everyone else. Our first five games aren't the toughest in the world, which could allow us to get some good momentum going. And after the matchup at Murray State, we've got a great rebound game lined up against W&M.

We could definitely lose 12-13, especially if we see an injury or two, but I would not be shocked in the least bit if we win 20+ games. Think about it: how many games did we lose last season because we absolutely sucked at shooting? Not that we will shoot 66% all year, but I think the days of shooting 30% as a team are behind us. These kids can score, and Blaine will teach them to play better defense, especially by the time conference play comes around. Sure, it's just one game against a D-II school...I get that. But when was the last time we scored 100? Counting exhibition games, the last time we eclipsed the century mark was in 2003, when we played the EA Sports East All-Stars. We've done it just twice since 2001, both times in the exhibition against the EA Sports All-Stars. So to do it with a group consisting of so many newcomers is incredible. It doesn't mean we're a great team, but it does mean this group has the potential to open some eyes.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to clean my rose-colored glasses and finish my glass of optimistic juice.

RE: '12-'13 Preseason Basketball Predictions
We hit 20 wins somewhere in the middle of the CIT.

I doubt we take the CIT route again after last year's money-losing experience with that tournament.

Did we make money when we played in the CIT the first time or CBI?

We're still going to be a young team and we'll probably pay for the extra practice time.

Those extraneous postseason tournaments helped us prepare for b2b CAA titles and tough games in the NCAA tournament for the final two years of Frank, Finney, DJ, etc. I'm a firm believer in that theory. Regardless of who you're playing, winning a postseason tournament is a feather in your cap, and it was key to that class' development.
