According to ESPN.com the NFL has offered Kansas City the opportunity to host the Super Bowl sometime between 2011 and 2021... provided Arrowhead gets a makeover and a some fashion of roof, retractable or permanent. Besides my regret to see a great outdoor experience possibly brushed aside, this could have plenty of ramifications for college sports.
a) On the lite side: Yet another venue eyeing for NCAA tourny spots, and don't think the central location and concept of America's Heartland won't be appealing. Impacts St. Louis more than the proposed dome in NJ, but it's one more facility that will want to enter the rotation.
b) More importantly this might help eliminate any concerns the Big 12 has with some of their conference championships. Far more central for the conference compared to St. Louis (which many feel is more Big Ten territory) or Texas. Kansas City is considered a good area for college sports. It'd also be more accessible for northern division teams and, unless the renovations alter the seating or until the Cowboys new stadium gets built, this would be the largest "neutral" venue for football championships. ie: More money and fans. Put simply, this could go a long way to resolving some of that conferences issues with decent, centrally located facilities for such a far-flung league, and as such solidifying the value of their football championship game.
c) And because we seemingly can't have enough, perhaps a Koch Industries Heartland Bowl?!!
Just for consideration.
