HEY, CincyKid!
Have you heard the Marching 110 is going to be at the game in Oxford this Saturday?! COGS

like me, you're an old guy! 03-wink do you remember what happened back in the 1970s that made it so the 110 couldn't come back to Miami anymore? i have heard stories but i don't think i ever knew the real reason why they were banned. apparently, that cold war has thawed since they are making an appearance this year, but i'm just curious as to what happened back then.

PS-i'll be at the game, will you?

well that's true but he's old and he probably remembers the time when Miami fans actually showed up and supported their teams.

The 110 is not going now. It's been 33 years since they were banned and the Ohio alumni were excited to see them return. I imagine the 1992 fight with Miami's football team reinforced the ban. I've heard the Marching 110 was told by Miami that the 110 would only have 5 minutes for pregame and no time for a halftime show. Nor could they do a show for post game, but share the field with the Miami band for a stand and alternate playing songs concert.

I don't know the general considerations given to visiting MAC bands. The only other collegiate game that Ohio has not been allowed a halftime show was OSU because it happened to be their alumni band weekend. Ohio may have jumped the gun on this trip announcement. The trip wasn't originally on their schedule, and they announced it last week. I imagine Miami already had their time allocated for their band and other halftime activities.

I would have expected Ohio to confirm their time allocations before announcing that they were going. It may have been nice step forward to accept the time offered instead of cancelling. However, it would cost quite a bit to bus/feed 240+ students and many of the Ohio band members would have to make changes to their work/study schedules. Oh...and there's that Halloween party thing :-).

Unfortunate, as I know a few people who bought tickets on the announcement and have now decided not to go now. I'll be there Saturday though.04-rock

RE: HEY, CincyKid!
EMU is hosting two visiting bands this year, Toledo two weeks ago, and Central Michigan on 11/10. Usually at EMU a visiting band does not play any pregame, gets roughly equal time for a halftime show, and then shares the field with the EMU band after the game alternating songs. This is pretty similar to what I've seen when the EMU band goes on the road, although I do recall them also getting to play their pregame show when they've played at Michigan.

I'm guessing the only reason the Marching 110 wasn't being allowed to do a halftime was because of the late notice. However, it did boost ticket sales for Miami. I just have been trying to figure out how that conversation went.

Miami: "Hey Ohio, we would like to lift the ban and invite the Marching 110 to the Miami/Ohio game this year."
Ohio: "Wow...that's wonderful. We'll spread the great news."
Ohio: "Ok...the band's excited, the team's excited, the fans are excited, the alumni are excited. How much time should we plan for?"
Miami: "Well...we can give you 5 minutes at the very beginning of pregame and allow you a shared concert after game is over."
Ohio: 03-banghead

I can't think of any college band that's come down to Athens, maybe Central Florida during their brief period in MAC, but don't recall them performing.

RE: HEY, CincyKid!
this is such a bummer, but i figured it was Miami's fault that the 110 cancelled. rat ba$tards! just one more reason to whip up on them on saturday! 05-mafia i bought my ticket and am still planning on going!

i can remember Toledo's band coming a couple of times to Athens and Marshall's band has come too. I also remember years ago when Ball State brought a downsized version of their band as did Central Michigan but neither of them played on the field, just in the stands. Bowling Green's band might have come once, too, but i'm not real sure about that one.

I'm not at all knowledgable about the protocol with visiting bands...I guess I didn't realize the the visitors ever bring their bands and play at halftime..thought it was only the home team unless it's s bowl game or something.

RE: HEY, CincyKid!
Kent State sent their band to Miami a while back and we got to play either half time or after the game (I can't fully remember which at the moment). Kent also got to play a post game show at Ohio State, WVU, Navy, Temple, etc. Usually Kent's band goes to one away game per year to someplace deemed special in some way (hence places like Ohio State, Navy Temple so people could see Philly etc). In addition the band also always goes to the Akron game if it is away and Akron always sends their band to Kent. Buffalo sent their band to Kent once as well.

I do know that part of the Kent band decided to go to OU on their own dime to enjoy a game and even brought instruments. Even played a few times but then some of the OU people in charge got mad and told us we are not allowed to do that and were saying we could be kicked out unless we stopped. Oh well still won that game so it was SO worth it. I imagine the players were pumped to hear that support (I know that our basketball team did and the current coach in Ohio actually personally thanked the band in public for it).

In some schools away bands are common. USC sends at least a partial band to every away game they play. Most bands can't afford that though.

RE: HEY, CincyKid!
I don't actually know the story behind the story on this one. If I find out on Saturday I will post something. Miami always took their band to UC and vica versa, but the last couple of times UC would not let Miami on the field before the game or at halftime and therefore this year the band did not go. Seems to me it would be better for all fans if the bands were invited and allowed to perform. When we went to OSU this year, the Miami band played at Skull Session, a short pregame, a short halftime, and post game. That was well worth the trip.... Bobcat Backer said that Miami invited OU, if so that would be a policy change which has never been annonced publicly. If Miami did not invite OU's band, then it would seem the administration found another way to prevent the trip. Nobody i have talked to seems to know anything yet, but it should be a topic of discussion on Saturday.

The 110 wasn't given halftime, um, time. That's pretty much it.

Good idea to have the Toledo band there as their presence doubled the attendance! 03-wink

A 1,400-person band? That would be something! I believe EMU did claim about 1000 participants (more than 800 high-schoolers, plus the EMU band) in their Band Day halftime show. 04-rock

It is Family Weekend/Parents weekend at Miami - as such, all halftime slots were allocated months ago.

OU did not ask for a halftime slot until this past week, and all were taken. If OU had asked a month or 2 ago, they may have gotten a spot.

If I were Miami, I wouldn't want my parents seeing a superior product either.

Eck,

This is off the current topic of the thread, but it fits under the subject "hey, Cincykid!" so I figured I'd throw it in here.

For some really good laughs, go check out this thread. Some ECU fans are hilarious!
