Academic ratings are 80% perception, 15% bull**** and 5% actual academic markers. Yeah, I made those numbers up.

I would like to hear what y'all think. This is how I would put it:
1. SMU
2. Rutgers
3. Uconn
4. Temple
5. Cincinnati
6. Central Florida
7. Louisville
8. Houston
9. South Florida
10. Memphis
Not sure how good the Florida schools are or Temple...
Rank them -
Using the US News and World Report rankings (I know it’s not fair, but it’s like the SAT’s, the only test consistent across all schools):
NBE Members
US Naval Academy #14 National Liberal Arts Colleges
SMU #58 National Universities
UConn #63 National Universities
Rutgers #68 National Universities
Temple #125 National Universities
Cincinnati #139 National Universities
Louisville #160 National Universities
SDSU #165 National Universities
USF # 170 National Universities
UCF #174 National Universities
Houston #184 National Universities
Boise State #62 Regional Universities (West)
Memphis Rank Not Published National Universities
Teams Leaving
Pitt #58 National Universities
Syracuse #58 National Universities
Names being discussed as potential candidates
Army #18 National Liberal Arts Colleges
AFA #31 National Liberal Arts Colleges
BYU #68 National Universities
ECU #199 National Universities
Fresno #38 Regional Universities (West)
Yea -- but Temple is lower in rankings partly because we offer more majors than most schools. If you look at a ivy league, they offer far fewer majors than Temple does. Now that is starting the change as Temple focuses on quality of education, they are beginning to cut and merge majors on all levels (undergrad, masters, and PhD). If you just focus on the biggest colleges at Temple: business, law, and medicine -- Temple is ranked between 45 and 65.

I tend to agree. I think overall rating is simply that, and nothing more than a general measuring stick. A school can be ranked in the top 10 in business schools, but have an overall ranking of say 50. That same school ranked 50 overall, and 10 in business may have a ranking of 75 for its medical school. Temple is on the rise though, i beleive they were ranked 132 in 2011.

It does relate. I'm not a ranking expert, but I know that there are a bunch of different ranking criteria: endowment/student, annual budget/student, student/teacher ratio, graduation rate, alumni giving ratio, etc.
Because Temple has 130+ majors, it increases the amount of overheard they have to spend to run a department and that's less money they could be pumping into more successful majors. So what they are doing is combining 3 different colleges into 1 (Art, Music, and Performing Arts) to reduce the amount of money they spend on deans and admin staff...then they get to spend that money on students and report it that way. Then they are taking majors like LGBT studies and merging into Women's Studies. A similar thing in the school of education where they are combining majors. So it does have an impact, especially when a school has so many majors compared to other schools in a similar size.

I say we rate the cheerleaders of these respective schools...
I think a post-a-pic thread just became necessary.

I studied abroad at a university ranked with the Ivies in world rankings and the discrepancy between the quality of education there and at Temple was small if any. I think rankings are mostly full of ****

I would tell him/her to get a jump on that. 4.0 GPA's are all fine and dandy, but communication, leadership, and work skills go a long way, and, to some, are more important than GPA.

Some of that very well may be on the school, but some of that is often on the individual as well. It really helps to have leads or a matching program through the school, but if the opportunities are limited the student has to really try all avenues.

Most, if not all, colleges provide opportunities for students to gain summer internships, Co-ops (founded at UC) and on campus work experiences.

The U.S. News rankings are fluid. Among NBE FB schools, UConn was #1 last year. This year SMU is #1. Schools move up and down all the time.
The OP couldn't have been from Miko ... he would have referenced ACC superiority.

RE: NBE school prestige (academic)
As an athlete I always enjoyed watching the nerds squabble over who had the nicest pocket protector or neatest slide rule. In the end it didn't matter. We still murdered them out in dodge ball and stuff them in lockers every chance we got.
Amazing how some things in life never changes. Some still can't get in done on the ball field, in the bedroom or in the board room yet they hold on to how smart they are and where they went to school.
Reality check: no one in the real world gives a flying ph-uck where you went to college. All that diploma does is help open the door for the first job. The rest is up to you college boys.
Personally I believe a college education is over rated. Your parents, your teachers lied to you. Just because you get your degree from some so-called institution of higher learning doesn't mean you will get a job.
