Another reason the electoral college was created was to prevent each state from running their own candidates for president and winning with a plurality of votes in the larger states.

We don't live in a democracy. We have a representative republic. There is a difference because the closer you get to pure democracy means the closer you will get to tyranny by the majority or mob rule. The fact that senators are no longer appointed by the states merely kicked another check and balance out of the equation. Tell me what the difference is between the house and the senate? Since the senators are voted on by the people like the representatives, the distinction is very much blurred today. The advocates for the state governments were lost when senators were voted in directly by the people.
