RE: UMass Basketball
Jesse Morgan’s basketball career at UMass appears over
[Image: bos_u_jmorg6_cr_600.jpg]

AMHERST — Junior guard Jesse Morgan’s career on the University of Massachusetts basketball team appears to be over.

According to multiple sources close to the program, Morgan has been forced to withdraw from the university for disciplinary reasons and has returned to Philadelphia. He is attempting to appeal the decision. The sources said the action stems from the same undisclosed incident that caused Morgan to be suspended for the team’s Nov. 3 exhibition game.

Morgan returned for the season opener against Harvard and appeared in 14 games during the 2012-13 season before tearing knee ligaments in the Minutemen’s Atlantic 10 opener at Saint Louis. Before the injury he was the team’s second-leading scorer at 13.4 points per game.

Morgan has only one year of eligibility remaining and he sat out a year as an academic nonqualifier as a freshman. Thus he would need a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible as a transfer to another Division I school.

Minutemen make first appearance in the poll in 15 years

AMHERST, Mass.- After a 6-0 start to the 2013-14 season with wins over teams from the ACC, the SEC, and the Big Ten, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team is ranked 24th in this week's Associated Press poll which was released on Monday afternoon. It marks the first appearance in the rankings for the Minutemen since the Nov. 17-23, 1998 poll - just over 15 years to the day.

College hoops summer catchup:
Atlantic 10 Conference

We've officially reached that awkward point in the college hoops offseason where the dust has mostly settled from all the transfer/coaching carousel madness, but it's still far too early to start any serious previewing of the 2014-15 season.

In keeping with the spirit of the season, it's time to continue our series of brief rundowns of what each conference looks like after all the moving and shaking that has happened since Connecticut cut down the nets in Dallas. Today we look at an Atlantic 10 Conference which sent a record six teams to the Big Dance in 2014, and saw one of them (Dayton) become America's sweethearts after advancing all the way to the Elite Eight.

RE: UMass Basketball
College Basketball Preview 14-15: Atlantic-10
[Image: realgm-basketball.jpg]

In the new era, A10 teams will have to try to win the way they always have, by finding hidden gems, developing players, and giving players a second chance. (Of the A10’s nine former Top 100 recruits, four are transfers from Power Five conferences.)

Even with this strategy, the A10 can continue to occasionally have brilliant seasons. Last year the A10 sent six teams to the NCAA tournament. The problem for teams in the A10 is that it can take longer to restock the cabinet. Five of last year’s tournament teams; Dayton, UMass, George Washington, St. Louis and St. Joseph’s all lost significant pieces. When talented seniors leave, teams in the A10 sometimes need a year or two to rebuild, while teams in the Power Five conferences simply reload.

http://basketball.realgm.com/article/234...ource=t.co

Massachusetts: Cady LaLanne, Trey Davis, Maxie Esho, and Derrick Gordon were all quality players on last year’s NCAA tournament team. And the team doesn’t have to go with a young unproven PG to replace Chaz Williams. West Virginia transfer Jabarie Hinds is a former Top 100 recruit, and he’ll slide nicely into the lineup.

But there are three major problems. First, UMass may have earned a six seed last year, but they weren’t really that good. They won key non-conference games against bubble teams like LSU and Nebraska that boosted their profile, but they won those games early in the year, before a team like Nebraska really hit its stride. In A10 play, the Minutemen were just 10-6, and their margin-of-victory said they were really a bubble team, not the tournament lock their seed would suggest.

Second, like George Washington, the drop-off from the starters to the projected bench is pretty steep. Don’t let Tyler Bergantino’s high efficiency rating fool you, he basically never shot last year. After the starting five, the bench projects to be a major liability. Third, Hinds is a significant downgrade from Chaz Williams. Hinds had a worse assist rate, worse turnover rate, and he never got to the free throw line at West Virginia. Finally, Hinds was a worse outside shooter than Williams, which is saying something given that Williams wasn’t known for his outside shot. If Hinds has made significant personal strides in his year practicing with the team, UMass can make the tournament again. But it won’t be easy.

A10talk write-up by Grant Labebz

3 under-the-radar Atlantic 10 transfers in 2017-18

Quote:1. Bo Zeigler, George Washington Colonials

USF forward Bo Zeigler decided to graduate and transfer this offseason after 3 seasons with the Bulls. In 2016-17, Zeigler averaged 4.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per content despite playing just 20.5 minutes per game. Zeigler had the 9th best block percentage in the American Athletic Association last year, proving he’s come a long way on the defensive end of the floor. He also shot 52.3% from two-point range in league play, which ranked 15th in the AAC. Though Zeigler didn’t get much playing time in conference play last year, he had a 20 point performance earlier last season against Bethune Cookman, tying his career-high.

With the departures of Kevin Marfo and Collin Smith, 20.5 minutes per game is going to be a thing of the past for Bo Zeigler. The 6-6 senior is going to be relied upon heavily at the 3 and the 4 along with Arnoldo Toro and Patrick Steeves. Though Maurice Joseph has been struggling to keep a solid roster intact, the Colonials will have an undervalued wing in Bo Zeigler next year.

2. Jaylen Brantley, Massachusetts Minutemen

Massachusetts probably didn’t get enough credit for landing impact transfer Jaylen Brantley from Maryland. The rising senior transferred to Amherst in order to be closer to home, and he should provide serious upside for Matt McCall in the coming season. Immediately, a number that stands out to me is Brantley’s 46.5% three point shooting percentage in Big Ten play, ranking third in his league. Massachusetts is a team that shot a collective 29.7% from deep (339th in the nation), and the Minutemen lose their two leading three point shooters in Donte Clark and Zach Lewis. Brantley’s value can’t be overstated for a team that’s got some rebuilding left to do.

Expect Jaylen Brantley to be more than just a role player next year, as he should see a large chunk of minutes at the 1 or the 2. In accordance with C.J. Anderson and LuWane Pipkins, this backcourt really isn’t going to be as bad as many people are painting it out to be. At the end of the day, Massachusetts has a solid core of guards and an incredible post player in Rashaan Holloway, so who knows, maybe the Minutemen can surprise.

3. D.J. Foreman, Saint Louis Billikens

Of the three impact transfers that Travis Ford and co. add this season, D.J. Foreman may be the most undervalued. D.J. Foreman made steady improvements from his freshman to sophomore season as a Rutgers Scarlet Knight. He went from just 3.8 points and 2.7 rebounds in 2014-15 to 7.9 points and 6.0 rebounds in 2016-17. Foreman ranked 23rd in the Big Ten in defensive rebounding percentage in his sophomore season. The rising junior is going to be a workhorse on the glass, and his offensive numbers are primed to make a jump as well. Perhaps D.J. Foreman’s most underrated asset is his ability to get to the free throw line, though he shot the ball at just 56.0% two seasons ago. Yet, the sophomore had a free throw rate that ranked top 100 nationally and 2nd in the Big Ten Conference. If he can improve his efficiency at the line, he’ll be an enormous asset next year.

D.J. Foreman is going to make up a very good frontcourt with Hasahn French and Elliott Welmer. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Rutgers transfer average 10 points and 7 rebounds per game next season, as he should be a big piece to the puzzle scoring the basketball and pulling in much needed boards.
