The article also describes how horseracing and baseball where the two most popular sports and how the two were combined in the World Series. Also, note that if horseracing is the #2 and betting is done causually, then also note that the state of Kentucky and it's horseracing were only miles from the Cincinnati boarder. It's understandable how the two were combined.
