Rusty is in his 27th year as the AP writer in Columbus.
The MAC uprising is making him uncomfortable and they have a fifty something win streak versus in-state teams. Plus, almost losing to Toledo didn't help. Plus rising powers Cincinnati and Ohio U are becoming major threats to the buckeyes.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and state that while I truly believe OSU (and Michigan) are extremely arrogant, I do not think the reasoning behind this is due to them being afraid to play us.
Bottom line, the lower half of the Big Ten is not good. Heck, the upper half of the Big Ten is not good this year.
A powerhouse like OSU might need a boost in SOS down the road. All the attention is heading towards the SEC and the Big 12.

I'll believe it when I no longer see teams like Youngstown State on their schedule. The AQ schools still want the extra home games that they can buy. Besides, I don't really think it matters who they play OOC. If a team from the SEC, Big 10, 12, Pac 12 or ACC go undefeated they will be in the final 4.
If OSU wants a better strength of schedule, they'll need to leave the Big Whatever. Not much difference between the top half of the MAC and the bottom half of the Big Whatever.

They also will need to leave Ohio Stadium...cant play four home OOC games versus other BCS teams. Some major cash they will give up on two home games a year just to hope for a top four ranking. I'll believe it when i see it.

Good point. Imagine having to play some teams on the road! What would that be like I wonder?
Is there anyone on this board that didn't see this coming with the announcement of the new format? The shift from the BCS was an attempt to concentrate power and money, not to spread the opportunities.
OSU future non-AQ schedule...
2013 - Buffalo (also playing Florida A&M)
2014 - Kent St (also playing Navy)
2015 - NIU (one slot still open)
2016 - BGSU (also playing Tulsa)
So are they going to buy out the 14-16 games?

Of couse not. But I figure they'll still schedule a few soft opponents thru a season. But, the reduced demand will lower those payouts.

They'll also probably play Ohio MAC teams, since that got the politicians' attention when they were giving big paydays away to poor teams outside of the state.

If they want tougher teams they would have to go on the road.
This^
They play an out of conference road game about once every three years and they lose it.

To be fair they have an away OOC game for the next 5 seasons and 4 of them are vs good AQ teams with the other being vs Navy.
