NFL Refs
What can be said more about the NFL refs. Anyone? Mistake after mistake, tolerated by the league. Meetings over the last four days with the refs union have produced nothing. Teams winning that should not win, calls made that should not be called, and god forbid, players getting away with penalities and violations all over the field without calls being made. Yet we continue to watch these awful games with awful officiating. Why is the NFL, one of the most productive and lucrative leagues in professional sports so reluctant and steadfast against increased salaries and benefits for it's refs or against unions? Why is a league with record profits and revenues refusing to cooperate with union officials and sign a long term deal with the refs? One reason, I call it GBS (Greedy Bast - - - Sydrome). It's currently up for review at my request in the most recent DSM IV (diagnositic and statistical manual used by psychologists to classify mental/emotional disorders). Get it, I'm asking for a new syndrome to be classifed, ha ha. Anyway, it's defination or GBS is seen as an individual or group behavior in which the individual/group has more money than one can imagine and still continues to be as cheap as if they had less than a dime to their name. That is GBS and that is what the NFL league officials are currently inflicted with, GBS !!!. Here is a comment from the perspective of The Nation magazine. Good reading.
My take on this is if the refs are being asked to give up their full time jobs to become full time officials with the league, then compensation must follow. Some of the officials have great careers such as lawyers and engineers. Trying to give the officials little or no raise of their 8000 a week job or 75K per year and expect them to sign a deal, no pension only 401K, is alot to ask. The game's integrity is at risk here and soon nothing will be able to bring it back. My feeling is each ref gets 250K per year, full time job with pension benefits retroactively applied. The refs were and are part of the profits and should be part of the benefits. Yes, no one ever paid to see the game officiated, but no one ever paid to see a game without rules, rules that are applied inappropriately, long delays while decisions are being made and total confusion on the field. Nobody paid for that either !!!

The real refs are going to the bank pretty soon after this debacle.

RE: NFL Refs
You're right the refs will cash in. They deserve it. They deserve the pay and benefits as they contributed to the success of the league.

RE: NFL Refs
Meh. The real refs have screwed up in similar fashion. Just not as frequently.
There's a learning curve, for sure. And if they'd have been able to get the B-team refs, and not be stuck with the G-team, it wouldn't be an issue at all.
Just saying, you shouldn't be expecting any kind of resolution any time soon.

RE: NFL Refs
The thing is. Why should the NFL bring back the referees that are on strike? Every game that the new refs work they get better. By the end of the season they will be experienced refs.

& they did! When was the last time you set foot in an NFL stadium, in a sporting event of any kind, and the official(s) get a rousing ovation from the fans? I have to go back to high school, and trust me when I tell you, that was a long , long time ago.

RE: NFL Refs
Refs, just like everybody else makes mistakes. Even the regular refs are making mistakes and missing calls. Everything was magnified 10-fold when the replacement refs where calling the games. No single call is going to decide a game. The Packers and their high powered offense was nonexistent most of the game. If they played to their full potential, then that game would have not been decided on that infamous "Hail Mary" play.
But man, every fan base in any sport thinks there is some conspiracy against their team. I think these fans needs to stop crying about every single call and pin some blame on their team for committing these penalties.
