I never realized just how nice it was that NHL hockey was gone. Now Sports Center is polluted with hockey highligths that eats up valuable time when they could be spending more time on real sports.

What is considered to be 'real sports' is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree with this guy...

a) Their job is to appeal to as many fans as possible;

b) What, we need MORE poker or strong man competitions? I don't think so.

Don't tell me that hockey isn't a real sport! Please you go skate around on ice in sprints for 60 minutes while getting your ****** kicked trying to shoot and pass and control a little hard rubber disc. Its by far the hardest and one of the most demanding sports to play. Personally hockey is my favorite sport with football a close second. Hockey is something the northern kids grow up with and the southern kids just don't get. Go Bruins and Go Devils!!!

I have a little bit different perspective...

Sports Center can be considered polluted when it covers ANYTHING besides college fottball and basketball. Everything else IS pollution.

I don't care what T.O.'s been up to.
I don't care about steroids and MLB.
I don't care about NHL labor disputes.
I don't care about NBA smackdowns.

Just give me 100% college football and then 100% college basketball and I might be able to watch that show; otherwise, my thumb is on the channel button quicker than a duck on a junebug.

I don't think it's the sports coverage that bothers me with SportsCenter as much as it is the irrelevant coverage of issues that aren't even pertinent in that day's show. For example, on Thursday they cover USC for the 756,239th day in a row when the Trojans don't play until Saturday. Meanwhile we need to "look ahead" to the Yankees-RED Sox ALCS (when it's not even going to happen). And Stephen A. Smith needs to scream at me for 5 minutes about why the Knicks getting Eddy Curry is a GOOD thing. 03-puke

Give me ESPNews where at least I don't have to wade through ****** journalism to get the scores and highlights.

I hate ESPN, and only watch it for college football and college basketball. And the NFL from time to time.

I can't watch Sportscenter anymore... its just smug announcers who think they are the sh*t trying to out one-line each other. Puh-leeze. Just give the highlights.

SC usually has an hour maybe hour and a half to get through everything in America's sports, which sometimes is pretty tough (even worse when there is CFB, CBB, NBA, Hockey, NFL and maybe another honorable mentioned sport, like lawn mower racing  )
These guys aren't your average sports writers, they have to find out items in the middle of the night right after a game is over, host a radio show, maybe a TV show and the occasional media article.
I mean I would love it if all they talked about was NCAA, MLB, and NFL, but that won't happen for a while. ESPN will be doing that 10 years from now MAX.

Hah. Real sports you say. Hockey IS a real sport, in that it requires significant athletic ability.

So what does ESPN have that ISNT a real sport? Several things.

1. Poker. Anything an 85 year old woman who is 30 pounds overweight could play (provided you could live with stats like that), is not really a sport. Poker is a GAME.

2. Billiards. I saw a big tub o' person doing pretty well. GAME.

3. Bowling. Almost any human being can lift 16 pounds. And if you are a good bowler, you don't really use much arm strength, its more in form. Another GAME, not "sport".

4. NASCAR is debatable...steering isnt power, so its not like its easy. At least it requires some form of athletic ability. Even if it isnt football or rugby etc...at least you need your body for SOMETHING. And if you're too fat...you weigh down the car...LOL

5. Most shows on espn are at least based on sports, but i should definitely point out that "around the horn" is not a sport itself, though it is about sports, and belongs on ESPN. Things like this are listed to make the list more complete.

6. Juggling? Man you'd have to be up late to see it though. I guess you need to be flexible? Its more of a sport than biliards.

Incidently, hockey is very much a sport. Especially if you get into fights, which is 3/4 of the fun :D . Even if you don't, try skating around for a few hours swinging a stick, and you'll probably find it difficult. Add getting plastered into walls and knocked down and having to get back up, and suddenly its challenging.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't want to watch hockey either, but it IS a sport.

I would contend that rugby, wrestling, boxing (especially if you suck LOL), and several other sports are more demanding than hockey, but hockey is no cakewalk, at all.

I am originally from pennsylvania, so I have grown up with SOME hockey.

 I jsut wanted to get the hockey fans blood pressure to rise. I have nothing really against hockey, other than I just flat out don't enjoy it. I relate it to how many folks think I'm crazy for being a NASCAR fan. To each there own right? 04-cheers

Diddy,

Did you realize that EVERY event/sport you listed...draws 2-20 times the TV Rating then the NHL?

Did you know the LA Market drew a "0" TV rating for the NHL on Opening Night on OLN. NHL got a ZERO!!

Dogs playing poker, 15 yr old spelling bees, etc....all brought better TV Ratings (and with that higher sponsor $$$$03-wink to ESPN.

ESPN is a business...if basically no one is watching on TV...they won't just "carry it" to lose $$$$.

Disney (owns ESPN) has lost enough $$$ thru the years (especially with ABC) but now looks like they have finally righted the ship.

NHL will always draw high attendance at the Arenas...because those people are the diehards...unfortunately...other then them...there aren't many else.

KL

PS. And yes...I actually like Hockey...grew up an Islander fan and Princeton Univ.

KnightLight,

Princeton Fan? Wow.... I graduated from RPI and obviously an Engineers Fan... although, they haven't done too much recenty. I was there when Joe Juneau was playing.......

Growing up north I never really understood the NASCAR passion that fans have down south - even after I moved to South Carolina and lived in the south for 8 years.

Yeah...my neighbor's Dad in NJ grew up in Canada...played hockey as a kid...and would always take us to Princeton Hockey Games on cold, snowy, winter nights.

As a kid, it was AWESOME!!

That old rink, plus seeing preppy rich kids get wasted and curse...that was pretty cool too!

KL

PS. Seemed that Harvard and Cornell always had Princeton's number. (Heck, other then Basketball, everyone had Princeton's number....and I still remember when Princeton's Football Stadium use to be HUGE...before they scaled it back and upgraded it 10-20 yrs ago.)

NJ...still the best state to grow up as a kid.

hockey may very well be a sport, but you wouldn't know it watching espn.

i am the textbook definition of an outsider when it comes to hockey. i can't even name five players who play in the league (not kidding). you know what hockey looks like to me?? a CIRCUS rather than a sport.

here two examples of what i consider a moronic, yet commonly shared view of hockey.

1. GREAT GAME!!! the score was 8-3, but there were like five or six fights!!!

2. very dissapointing. it came down to the final minutes and my team won, but there weren't any fights.

the appeal of hockey to a lot of people isn't how technical it is or how fast it is or how exciting it is (and it is certainly all those things). the appeal to it is the fighting, and the trashtalking, and all the extra curriculars outside of the game itself. don't believe me?? watch sportscenter.

if you're a fan of hockey i'm not saying that you shouldn't be. i'm just saying that for my personal taste, the climate that surrounds hockey isn't one of sport, but one of circus. that's what i don't like about it.
