Devils' advocate-- the Yankees play by play guy, John Sterling, is actually worse than Wolo.

In fact, if a Mount Rushmore of terrible broadcasters existed I think it would be: Brent Musberger, John Sterling, Wolo, and Tim McCarver. You might have to add a 5th spot for Dukie V.

HEY! I didn't write that.

Maybe I am in the minority but I find George to be one of the most fascinating figures in the history of the city of Memphis. With his knowledge and the people he knows, who else can claim to be more the "spokesman of Memphis" than George. Sure, he's not perfect but he has basically been the voice of the city for all those years. I can't think of a single more important figure in the city. And in fairness to George, it might be difficult for him to actually act normal in public. I am sure he gets stopped and talked to constantly being the figure that he is in the city and mid-south.

I've found my fix for gumbo elsewhere in Memphis (Johnny G's). Tell me I'm not going to dislike Mr. B's.

Have you tried the gumbo at the Deja Vu restaurant on Florida north of Crump?
No. But I did get the crabs at Deja Vu once in Frayser.

This is so easy I'm just going to skip it.

RE: Why I hate George lapides
I was doing some shoulder rehab last year. Earliest time slots in the morning that they had. George was in there. Only 3 of us in there all together. My training lady said "ooh, do you know who that is working out over there?" (referring to GL).....thinking I would want to jump at the chance to know I was in the presence of the Great George Lapides. I said "Yeah, I know exactly who that is, and I'd appreciate it if you would keep me as far away from him as possible." She didn't know quite what to make of me after that.......

Visualizing your quoted description of the training lady asking that question, you may also want to stay as far away from her as possible

As the original poster of this thread, I regret that I did it.

As someone once said, "If you don't have anything good to say about someone don't say anything at all."

RE: Why I hate George lapides
I'll never forget when John Calipari was hired as head coach at Memphis. He flew in and had his first press conference in the media room at the pyramid. There were about 4 or 5 rows of chairs set up for the media to ask questions. Approximately 50 or so people. George positioned himself right smack in the middle and he stood (as every single other person sat) the entire time and made sure he dominated all the questions that day. IT was an absolute LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, I'M GEORGE....I'M GEORGE event.

I'd be great if the training lady you mentioned would not help George with his rehab or training until he said

"I want to play" !!!! COGS

Maybe?
Many years ago the Cardinal Caravan came to Memphis at the Rendezvous. Cards weren't doing very well so they made Joe Torre work the Caravan. Joe was secluded in a side room before the event and a young pitcher was playing the role of security guard, not letting anyone pass. Lapides walks up cocky as hell and asks the pitcher loud enough for everybody to hear if Joe is in the room. "Yes, he is," replied the pitcher. "Let me through, then," GL demands. Pitcher doesn't budge. "No one is allowed, sir." GL starts berating the kid worse than Wolo. "Do you know who I am? I've known Joe Torre longer than you've been alive. You go in there and tell him George Lapides is outside." Kid went back and told Torre. Comes back out and GL pounces. "You should have listened to me. I told you I knew him. Did you ask him if he knows me?" "Yessir," the kid anwered. "And what did he say?" GL asks. The kid answered "Yes." GL pounced. "I told you he knows me. Why would tell you he knows me if he doesn't know me. Did you ask him if I could come in to the room?"
Kid answered, "Yes."
Cocky, dramatic, and loud GL asks, "And what did he say?'
Kid smiles a bit and says, "No."

RE: Why I hate George lapides
I enjoyed George's friday morning show over the years during football season with Greg Roberts. I think overall George has been ok. My favorite was when something big would happen in college football or basketball and he would go get the old Coach from some place like Arkansas State (that he went back 40 years with) to be his guest "expert". That made me laugh, they might as well just call me and get my opinion.

George always made it seem like he was part of the in crowd, and that made him better then me.

He always said that he knew people and that made him important.

I don't know George Lapides, and maybe he was just putting on a radio act.

But if the way he talked is the person he really is, than man the words from some Hair Band song ring true, "Man, you are some kind of sinner!"

Hate is a strong word, you need to find something else to occupy your time.
