"Yvonne Katz, a longtime school superintendent who earned her master’s degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has issued a $1 million pledge to support the university.
Her pledge will support both the UTSA Office of Alumni Programs as well as students who are pursuing careers in education. UTSA will rename the alumni office the Dr. Yvonne Katz Alumni Programs Office later this year. When Katz graduated from UTSA in the 1970s, she worked with a dozen other students to create the UTSA Alumni Association. She also served as the association’s first president.
In her career, Katz has served as superintendent of Harlandale Independent School District, Spring Branch Independent School District and Beaverton School District in Beaverton, Ore. Katz also worked as a middle school principal for Northside Independent School District."
By the way, this Office of Alumni Programs moved into their new office in the new Bauerle Road Garage.

Alamo Colleges' newest trustee, Yvonne Katz, has dedicated her career to education as a former principal and superintendent of Harlandale Independent School District and others.
But it was a surprise to University of Texas at San Antonio officials when Katz, 68, told them of her plan to dedicate a gift of $1 million to the university. The pledged funds will benefit UTSA's Office of Alumni Programs and students planning education careers, the school announced Wednesday.
Katz, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday, long has been a trailblazer for UTSA and its alumni association.
In 1974, she earned her master's degree in educational leadership with the university's first graduating class, said Jim Mickey, UTSA's associate vice president of marketing and alumni programs.
Katz has made multiple of gifts to support UTSA students over the years, he said, adding: “I had no idea that Yvonne had the capability to give this kind of gift.”
She was involved in the formation of the alumni association, became the association's first president in 1977, and was recognized as the university's first alum of the year in 1980.
In 1985, Katz became Harlandale ISD's first female superintendent. Her donations to UTSA began the same year, when she provided $300 for a textbook scholarship, Mickey said.
Katz left Harlandale seven years later to lead a school district in Oregon and later returned to Texas, becoming superintendent of Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston.
She also served as director of school accreditation and associate commissioner at the Texas Education Agency, according to her resume.
She returned to San Antonio in 2004. After retirement, she ran without opposition for the Alamo Colleges District 7 trustee seat last May.
A grandmother several times over, Katz enjoys riding her patriotically painted Harley-Davidson motorcycle around San Antonio, according to a biography on the Alamo Colleges website.
This fall, UTSA's alumni programs office will be renamed in her honor, Mickey said.
The university now has more than 90,000 alumni. With the launch of the school's football program, the association's active membership shot up to about 7,500 members, he said.
“I can't think of anyone we're more proud of to have her name associated with the alumni center because she's had so many firsts at UTSA,” he said. “She's just such a part of our past history and will now be such a part of our future.”
