Exclamation Football Grades for Ball State Game
We would do this after each FB game to get everyone input of game thoughts by positions.. We used A,B,C,D F, incomplete for the items below.. I want to do this for each game..

QB "C" Could have thrown better passes, almost got Hill killed on a play.
RB- "B" I thought they played well, what happened to Brummfield getting time.. B, Hill played well.
WR "C" I saw a lot of good things from the freshmen.. We should go with Creel and Jones.
TE "D" Russell sucked this game and Hopskin didnt get the ball enough. Why?
OL "C" our QB didnt have enough time or he didnt feel comfortable/trusting enough of them..

DL "F" This was a huge problems.. I have a strange feeling that Ball State are sending our DL Thank You Cards for the way they played.. We have to get Travis and Cy outta there.. They were getting their azz handed to them.. enough said.
LB "C" too many miss and almost tackles.. You couldnt really tell because the rb was on them so quickly.
DB "C" Roses is a marked man and everyone is going after him..everyone cant be wrong... Rouse outbound hit was real dumb play..
ST "C" Still waiting for a big play here..

Coaches "D-" Emu coaches were out-coached and did not make adjustments to the games.. Very poor play calling.. Right people wasnt on the field at the right time.. Why pull Scott from kick-off.. What happened to T.Allen being back there? This defense need to be flying all over the place to hit people.. I am thinking the kids were to tight and got hit with a surpise... Ball State coaches "A"

TV Announcers "B" They were okay or better... They said the same things I was thinking about the games..

Fan
I couldnt tell from the view on TV.. I think they said it was 15,000 plus there..

RE: Football Grades for Ball State Game
What game did you watch when our offense was out there?

QB A- he was on target WR and TE's just dropped the ball yet 3 passing TD's and a Rushing TD and led team in rushing
RB B ran ok,catches by Hill and Greene but also missed some holes in short yardage and can't block the screen to Greene much better
WR D- Scott had like 4 dropped balls and a TD but the 4 were in critical situations.
TE C/D I think Hoskins played well but he fumbles the last play Russell brutal
OL B+ They DID protect him all day, the only times he ran was because of coverage not pressure, they opened up holes, but they like the RB's have to be better in short yardage.

DL F you saw it
LB D see above
DB D Couldn't get the pass breakups needed in 3rd down
ST C kickoff no good punt was good except for 1st one, FG kicker should be replaced, Kickoff return ok BTW Pudge Shererer had the bigest kick return of the day at 33 yds Scott took two to total that.

With the number of new players EMU had on the field I suspect that the depth chart and playing time will look very different next week. The coaches are still figuring out their team. Expect some adjustments on the DL and more PT for the freshmen receivers.

Agree with Nickle and agree with many of the thoughts in the post above.

I did think Gillett had a very good game. That is encouraging!!

It will take a while to sort things out on the DL. Let's hope that the problem was all of the newcomers playing their first game vs. a very good OL.

I assume the LBs suffered because of the porous DL.

The LBs over pursued like crazy. Pali looked good in the 1st half, but then Blake Poole played the 2nd half (not sure why Pali was benched) and looked lost. Cudworth played poorly as well. I don't think I heard Weingrad's name once. Maybe time to try Kurtz out there?

Someone who knows a LOT MORE about defense then me needs to be able to take a SYSTEMATIC look at our defensive performance and how failures in parts of the defense AFFECTED OTHER PARTS of the defense.

Need to look at each of the 11 position and how a failure, on any given play, by any one or two or three players can affect THE OTHER PLAYERS.

The most obvious is where lack of a pass rush affecting the DBs or maybe causing LBs to blitz more and leave the DBs with more one-on-one coverage or where LBs spend half the game chasing RBs downfield.

My best guess is that if the DL gets significantly better then the LBs and DBs will look better.

Thursday reminded me of 2010 and that's scary.

I believe the offensive line did not allow a sack and the defensive line got one sack.

RE: Football Grades for Ball State Game
BTW, I'm re-watching the 2nd half of the game on ESPN3, before the game is no longer available.

The 3rd quarter went from 13 - 13 to 34 -13.

Interesting enough there were ONLY (IMHO) several critical plays which turned the game (another posted similar thoughts).

1). As everyone knows, Ty Russell had a potential TD bounce off his shoulder pad. That would have been EMU 20 BSU 13. Instead BSU got the ball and went ahead 20 - 13.

2). The drive around the 30 - 40 yard line on 4th down (!) someone had Edwards down low and Pali high and he managed to go forward for a 1st down and later a TD.

TWO game changing plays.

RE: Football Grades for Ball State Game
In the 4th quarter a very well executed on side kick bounced off a BSU guy to another BSU guy.

That could have gone either way.

I believe EMU was only trailing by 11 at that point.

BTW, Gillett looked really good in the game. He got the balls to his receivers all night and they had some nice stats.

RE: Football Grades for Ball State Game
Okay, I rewatched the game again last night and I still stad by what I said about and my grade.. I am not beating up our QB.. I don't think he will be the show stopper ife we go to a bowl game this season.

I saw the ptlaces that you listed but tthe game was lost on the Defensive side of the ball..

We must get the Defense better.. I think Coach "S" should share some blame and not call on Coach "E"
