The term was created for public colleges that "looked" like Ivy schools and maintained high national standards. The original list was William & Mary, Miami (Ohio), Cal-Berkeley, Michigan, UNC-Chapel Hill, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia.

Which is funny because Vermont is nothing special.

Texas looks nothing like an Ivy in my opinion. Its nice in some areas... but its no SMU or Harvard

University of Memphis slideshow (be patient - the pictures change slowly): http://www.memphis.edu/admissions/slideshows/index.htm

The University of Memphis is one of Tennessee's three comprehensive doctoral- extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state's largest city, it is the flagship of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually.

With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students from 50 states and more than 75 foreign countries, The University of Memphis has 25 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five state-approved Centers of Excellence

The Graduate School currently enrolls nearly 5,000 students in 38 departments offering 140 concentration areas.
The campus consists of 1,160 acres at four sites with nearly 200 buildings.
The University of Memphis’s six colleges offer baccalaureate degrees in 70 majors, master’s degrees in 51 subjects, and doctoral degrees in 18 disciplines.
The Mississippi Valley Collection is a unique repository of local and regional history.
The University of Memphis has five Centers of Excellence dedicated to scholarship and research in educational policy, Egyptian art and archaeology, applied psychology, earthquake science, and audiology and speech-language pathology.
The Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology plays a role in international research through excavation and study in Egypt. It houses one of the South’s most extensive libraries on ancient Egypt, as well as a fascinating collection of artifacts. Well, yeah I did go to college, but I spent most of my time occupying various, um, administration buildings, smoking thai-sticks, breaking into the ROTC and bowling. I'll tell you the truth, Brandt, I don't remember most of it

SDSU looks beautiful. I have been to Georgetown - great area, but 100 acres seems too small... buy up some land around it and build some stuff (I know yall are pretty much locked in)

If Uconn is a public ivy, who else is? Rutgers?
SMU is apart of the 'magnolia league' which means southern ivy haha

I didnt realize Temple's campus was so big. Glad it isnt a commuter school anymore. I know U-Houston and U-Louisville are both trying to drop their 'commuter school' status. Good direction in my opinion.

It's a pretty long list. Per "Greene's Guide", here are the Public Ivy's and their U.S. News ranking ...

Cal (21), and five other Univ of Cal schools
Virginia (25)
Michigan (28)
North Carolina (29)
William & Mary (33)
Wisconsin (42)
Washington (42)
Illinois (45)
Texas (45)
Penn State (45)
Maryland (55)
Ohio State (55)
Connecticut (58)
Florida (58)
Georgia (62)
Rutgers (68)
Minnesota (68)
Iowa (71)
Michigan State (71)
Delaware (75)
Indiana (75)
SUNY-Binghamton (90)
Miami-Ohio (90)
Colorado (94)
Arizona (124)

Several really good schools didn't make this list but should have ... (Georgia Tech, Pitt, Texas A&M, etc.).
