RE: Today is 2-deep day - what we know
Not that it really matters but I find it interesting that of all the players on the depth chart only 8 are from MI. Only 3 starters are from MI. Even more interesting that there are 3 starters from Canada.

EMU it seems has some good players from Canada on its past teams. I don't think English recruits there as heavily as some past EMU coaches. MSU used to recruit Canada very well but that has changed over the years.

I'm reading a rumor that Tyler Benz is suspended for the first two games of the season. Anyone know if there is any truth to this? He's listed in Thursday's depth chart behind Gillett.

Yes this was posted in a reply to an Eagle Totem post, the same post claims Yocum is no longer with the team.

If Yocum is no longer on the team that tells me that Mulder and Fulkerson beat him out.
Interesting that Daniels was an equipment manager last year. Start the "Rudy, Rudy, Rudy" chant now.

Here's the actual post:
1. Yocum isn’t on the team anymore.
2. Tyler Benz is suspended for the first 2 games.
3. Dustin Daniels was an equipment manager last year

Is this a Horatio Alger story?

The more likely solution, if you've watched the last two years, is that they are playing with scholarships. Fulkerson is a junior, has one year to go on a scholarship. Mulder can be red-shirted unless Fulerson's KOs are unbearably abysmal, and thus you don't owe him a scholarship until he's earned it by kicking for a year, that is, after Fulkerson graduates. If Yocum had started another year, they'd have had to give him a scholarship and keep Fulkerson on scholarship for another year at the same time.
I very much doubt that Fulkerson beat Yocum out on KOs and Mulder, the other possibility, is not starting. (Last year EMU was 2nd in the nation on KO return yardage allowed.)

Are you saying they kicked a better player off the team because he might merit a scholarship?

No, they didn't kick him off the team. They don't kick people off for non-disciplinary reasons once they've made the team. I believe he quit. Fulkerson was kicking FGs last year after handling both KOs and FGs the year before that. So, he must have improved hugely to have taken back the KO spot. We shall see.

Is Yocum going to a different school, such as D-II, as a scholarship player?

No, I heard he quit.
One thing I notice is that coaches tend to be very particular about the number of scholarships they give to kickers.

I do know as fact, he was kicked off team for missing curfew(like didn't come back kind of miss, not 5 minutes late) during training camp. Vast contrast to other coaches who'd suspend for 2 games for shoplifting and drug possession like Ball States Lembo. So glad we have an Integrity character coach.

Not true. Name your source for that 'fact.'

This is according to multiple sources but one I'd say most reliable current grad assistants. Saw them at the movie theater, whole team went was a end of camp treat provided by Coach English. I asked what happened to him and they were very quick to answer that he broke curfew rules.

I did my own investigation, which can be corroborated by multiple players.
He didn't 'miss curfew,' he had decided by the second-to-last night of camp to leave the team for his own reasons, and therefore did not stay the last night in camp.
This had nothing to do with any coach's 'integrity' or 'character' policy. He did not get 'kicked off' for staying out all night or doing something illegal or unethical. The situation bears absolutely no resemblance to the kind of things you're comparing it with.

I deleted my post, because I don't think its fair to the kid to comment on what I was told by the grad assistant coaches. But do know it was nothing criminal, I was merely stating the extreme cases of Our Coach and Lembo. Lembo will keep law breakers and our will dismiss rules violators, thats all.
