Pre-Two Deep Thoughts (Some Surprises)
First of all, don't take this as fact. These are simply my observations from what I've seen over the course of camp.

The team is in full Iowa prep mode. I stopped by at practice today and only stayed for like an hour because it's all Iowa prep (and it was hot as balls). I've always wanted to see how in season practice differed from pre season practice so it was cool.

Let me see if I can ruin all surprises for you when the two deep is released:

- I think Charlie Miller is going to redshirt. After spending all camp repping with the 1's and 2's, he was only getting freshman reps on Tuesday and today he was running with the scout team. I don't see how somebody practicing the opponent's plays ends up on the field, but I could be wrong. I think he's going to redshirt.

However, another true freshman I think you will be seeing on the field is Jacob Brinlee. Yeah, it surprised me as much as you.

I think the 9 WRs you'll see are:
Moore
Ashford
Lewis
Wells
Brown
Brinlee
Majors
Canada
Sebastino

Don't be surprised if you see Perez Ford on the two deeps, but as a defensive end. If he ends up red shirting, it still appears as if he has been moved to DE.

Your starting OL:
Loos, Colon, Ness, Pitt, Brown

I think there's a chance you see Keith Harris Jr. play this year, but I'm not sure either way.

Don't be surprised if you see Stone listed as the #2 corner over Faustin. They'll both play a lot, though.

As has been noted, Marlon Moore and Desroy Maxwell are both going to play, and it looks like Maxwell is going to play a lot.

I would still expected Boomer Mays to be the starting MLB in 9 days, but Jacques was back sporting a green jersey and getting some 1st team reps today.

Interesting stuff, especially about Perez Ford.

By "Canada" I assume you mean Brescacin?

What position is Marlon Moore playing now? I see he was recruited as a WR.

I know Maxwell is at TE or H back, but would have loved to see him at MLB. Must want Ford's speed off the edge because he's gotten significantly smaller since his recruiting days (gone from 6'2" to 6' and dropped a few pounds.)

7, you seemed to have gone to a lot of practices this summer. How did Mike Cotton look? I feel like I didn't hear his name as much as expected. I was almost sure he would play as a true freshman.

Got hurt really early on. Don't think it was anything too serious, but he's going to redshirt.

Yes.

Who is NIU's best player? Interesting enough no one stands out to me. Last year it was an easy answer.

P.S. what scares me about UI, there best player is the QB. THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION ON THE FIELD.

Melvin is the teams best player. And Scheelhaase isn't Illinois' best player. Not even close. He might not even start.

Jacob Brinlee may be the fastest player on NIU. Runner on First Place All State 4x400 relay team at Lake Zurich.

If no one stands out you haven't watched Melvin or Moore play when they're healthy.

If JVB is Iowa's best player we will win. Marvin mc nutt Made him look good the last couple years.

Great Post. Brinlee makes sense that extra year at Ft Union helped. The OL looks like the best 5. It appears they slide Pitts inside, thought he was an OT. TALL OLine. Maxwell is surprising to me, shorter Public League guy, not a classic 6'4 6'5 TE. Did NOT feel he would be ready this early. Good to hear reports on how strong he is.
We will rise and fall on the development of the OL.

Perez Ford at DE is an OUTSTANDING move. OUTSTANDING. Long term great for him and the Huskies. OUTSTANDING move. Think Pierre Paul type, but with the chance of being more physical. The Bear 1st rounder is NOT more athletic faster or bigger. We have a guy that has run 10.7 100 meters at DE. DAMN.

I thought CFN was bad with giving as many scenarios as possible and hoping one sticks, but the bleacher report is 100 times worse! So far this off season they have gone from a week 1 preview a month ago saying NIU would win 27-24, then followed by a feature article to say Iowa is on upset alert, and then followed by new 1 week previews this week saying Hawkeyes 30-17. Whiplash man!
