OT: College baseball recruiting for 2013
UConn just landed the #1 pitcher in New York City today, beating out LSU, UK, St. John's and others for his services. Andrew Zapata is a right-handed flamethrower who's been described as "one of the best pitchers from the city in years."

We also have the #1 recruit from Mass (Ryan Sullivan), the #1 recruit in CT, and a pitcher with a 0.83 ERA (amongst others). Penders can recruit. Hopefully we can start winning Big East tournaments, something we have not consistently been able to do.

College Baseball is probably the hardest sport to recruit for in college.

Not only are coaches handicapped by just having only 11.7 total scholarships per 35 man rosters (THANK YOU TITLE IX!), but coaches also have to deal with the June MLB Draft and the $$$$ MLB will throw at HS Seniors hoping to get them to sign prior to enrolling for college.

Getting commits in College Baseball is easy....so is signing (Baseball has an early signing period in November)....now, for the Class of 2013...they still have to sweat out the MLB draft next June.

NOTE: For those that don't follow college baseball closely: Coaches normally only give out "shares" of scholarships...i.e. say 0.2 or 0.4 to players to help extend their 11.7 scholarship limit.

Only a few players end up on full athletic rides...while others end up on academic scholarships.

Here's a commit for UCF. Don't know his current status though. He's the #12 pitcher in the nation, according to ESPiN.

He signed a MLB Contract with San Diego...after being selected #33 overall in this year's MLB Draft.

Eflin got a $1.2 Million signing bonus from the Padres.
