OT: UNC scandal deepens, all eyes on NCAA Prez (Updated articles)
Great article from the Sporting News...which basically challenges NCAA President Emmert to DO WHAT HE SAID last month in Penn State...and come down HARD on UNC...which has made a shamockery out of collegiate academics.

From link below:

Meanwhile, in Chapel Hill, N.C., the entire university is complicit in a systemic charade of bogus, no-show classes for athletes; a scheme that—you’re gonna love this part—the NCAA missed while investigating North Carolina over the past two years.

Fortunately, the man with the Big Stick has the Raleigh News & Observer doing the heavy lifting, exposing the real threat to the foundation of intercollegiate athletic sports. Or as my athletic director friend said, “Pandora’s Box.”

From 2007-2011, an internal review at UNC revealed 54 no-show classes in the Department of African and Afro American Studies where student-athletes were given grades for fake classes. The university says two department heads were responsible for the academic fraud, but the News & Observer says evidence suggests athletes were steered to classes by academic counselors assigned to the athletic department.

I thought the ACC and Big Ten set standard for good behavior. UNC, Miami, Ohio State, and Penn State are some pretty big names that are in NCAA jail.

I think this is exactly why most schools just "laugh" at new APR requirements and even new HS requirements.

From Alabama having "friends" at certain HS to "push certain top recruits through with high enough grades" to UNC's "fake classes with high grades which can keep their top football and now basketball players eligibile", I think the NCAA has no desire to point out the truth of what is going on at many major programs today.

I liked how Hayes challenged NCAA Prez in his SN article when he said:

This, Mr. Emmert, is the foundation of amateur sports. This, Mr. Emmert, is the one thing that can bring down the façade that is billions in television dollars on the backs of student-athletes. This, Mr. Emmert, is the very thing that can and will underscore the one dirty secret the NCAA has tried for decades to hide: college sports is a glorified minor leagues for professional sports.

It’s easy to get emotional about a pedophile, and make snap decisions in the name of children. It resonates with everyone and produces instant credibility—no matter how skewed the process.

What happens when Emmert has to make a real decision? What happens when the very existence of college sports comes into play and the general public isn’t as engaged as Joe Sixpack was with Penn State?

Probably right...as NCAA proved that while they were INVESTIGATING UNC for TWO YEARS...they just happen to glance over and miss the biggest academic scandal ever recovered in recent memory.

NCAA, especially to the BIG BOYS is:

They (NCAA) don't really want to know...because as Hayes helps expose, it would be a huge detriment to their Colleges TAX FREE STATUS.

If this had happened to a Tulsa or Boise State, they wouldn't be playing sports next year.

UNC is guilty of academic fraud? That's just great! Memphis is sure to get slapped with sanctions over this.

Meanwhile, they knew with enough certainty that Derrick Rose may or may not have taken his SAT that they could fine Memphis, erase wins and put us on probation for a lack of institutional control (and while they might have been right, they still couldn't prove any of it).

Probably right.

If I were North Carolina A&T, I'd be nervous as heck...as the NCAA has to come down on SOMEONE for UNC's outrageous academic scandal for their STUDENT-athletes.

With the latest evidence in regards to former 2-sport UNC star Julius Peppers indicating the academic fraud/scandal could have been in place since the last 1990's....this may not end well for someone (probably NC A&T).

See links for some recent updates this week:

North Carolina reviews possible post of Peppers' transcript

The University of North Carolina is investigating how what appears to be a transcript for former football star Julius Peppers surfaced on the university's website.

In a statement Monday, the school said it has removed the link and that
it couldn't discuss confidential student information covered by federal
privacy laws. The school didn't confirm the authenticity of the partial
grade summary, which lists Peppers' full name - Julius Frazier Peppers -
at the top.

Peppers' transcript might point to broader academic issues at UNC

By Dan Kane - dkane@newsobserver.com

On the football field, Julius Peppers was one of the most dominating players to ever wear a UNC uniform, an athlete dubbed a “freak of nature” so skilled that he helped take the university’s men’s basketball team to the Final Four in 2000.

But in the classroom, Peppers was a marginal student with a grade point average so low he was continually at risk of losing the opportunity to play, according to an academic transcript bearing his name. What kept bailing him out were several classes in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, a relatively young academic unit led by department chair Julius Nyang’oro

North Carolina's widening academic scandal could be test case for the NCAA's newfound power
Yahoo Sports Pat Forde

Well, that didn't take long.

After the NCAA circumvented its own crime-and-punishment process and blew up Penn State last month, we all wondered how long it would take for a follow-up test case to measure the willingness of the "new NCAA" to flex its precedent-setting muscles again. Was the Penn State case a sign of a new era in policing of athletic programs gone bad, or an isolated blip brought on by a school's unique abdication of morals and responsibilities?

Here's a new feature article from 2 writers from the Observer:

Between transcripts of Peppers, Austin, a decade of questions for UNC

By J. Andrew Curliss and Dan Kane

August 18, 2012

The academic scandal at UNC-Chapel Hill is marked, more than anything, by the disclosure of parts of two academic transcripts tied to high-profile athletes.

One was football star Marvin Austin, who was kicked off the team in 2010 and now plays in the NFL for the New York Giants. The other belonged to two-sport star Julius Peppers, an All-American in football who was a key reserve on the 2000 Final Four basketball team.

See link for complete article.

Emmert is a total sellout who is Delaney and Slive's prison *****. He has ceded all relevance to the conference commissioners of the big four conferences. He is dangerous and is an agent for elitism.

I think his actions and/or LACK of action in regards to the scandals at UNC, Miami and now Oregon will go along way in dictating how most view him as a NCAA Commish.

As one of the earlier articles noted that (paraphrase) "It's easy to be against child rape and the cover-up of sexual child abuse, its another to come down on programs, like UNC, which has had systems in place to "cheat" now going back at least a decade.
