I agree with most of what the judge said. My only quibble is the judge telling kids they owe the world something.

Yeah, I can see that. It's tough (but necessary IMO) to reconcile individualism/libertarianism w/ community. Protecting individual liberties is crucial, b/c they're so easily crushed, but that doesn't mean community doesn't exist.

This. The reason libertarianism can exist is because people can form communities and help each other when in need, not because the government forces them to, but because they want to help their neighbors.

There is nothing wrong with anything one does in their own self interest as long as the principle of non aggression is adhered to...but...I agree that community is important. We have lost a great deal of this since the Judge wrote this.
I would submit that the judges words are valid for the parents of kids also. I look around and the examples they set for their kids are directly tied to how lazy and sorry the kids are. The converse can be seen also with motivated high achievers. What a kid learns in the home has more to do with this than anything.
I have several close friends that I consider to be horrible parents. I have watched them over the years totally screw up their kids and then either blame them or someone else for the outcome. We all need to occasionally look in the mirror.
My dad used to constantly say..."Son...You can be a bum...it is easy." "You can also be successful...but..it takes work." He is an honest man that worked hard and is still involved in the community. I learned from him even though at the times I did not understand. Thanks Dad.

I hear ya, but people should want to give back on their own, not be forced to. I have no problem with people volunteering for a cause, or even being sentenced to one, but making it a mandatory obligation kinda blows. It's like being born with a debt.
My kid wants to volunteer at an animal shelter but he's too young. I would encourage my kid to volunteer for something and do some good, I might even demand it one day, who knows? But if I did that I would do so in order to build his character and not to pay back to the world some politically correct debt he was born with.
