He just doesn't hold my attention. Tony may have been rude and brash, but he was entertaining... the way he berated some of the callers was just hilarious to me. Nick Cattles' akward pauses in his speech remind me of a poor man's Jim Rome. IMO he's gotta come better than what he's shown so far.

I agree. I was excited when he first came on the air, but now I rarely listen to him. He is not as good as Colin Cowherd, but that is what he does. I can't stand to listen to his boring baseball commentary. Ugh.

I have called twice asking if he was planning to talk about ODU. Both times Richie said that he didn't know... I got the impression that Cattles is on his own.

I very rarely listen to 102.1, but I have been lately.

I listened for a while this PM. He was going on about drugs in baseball. It was not a topic that interested me in particular and he, Cattles, did nothing to make me interested. I think I will just go on enjoying afternoons radio free until some ODU folks show up on the air.

I like the baseball coverage when he is talking about the Nationals. I couldn't care less about the NFL talk and all the big market teams he brings up.

RE: Nick Cattles?
He certainly has a difference cadence from TM - he isn't afraid of dead air. He needs to realize that his audience is different from the northeast and we want more local flavor in our sports. He does beat the dead horse terribly, and if I were in charge of the show, I'd give him somebody to talk to instead of his long going rants about his Topic Of The Day.

But like any performance, it will evolve. Let's see what happens as we get into the Monarch seasons.

He posted on his facebook about the 50% of major league players being juiced and the cheater... I had typed a response "Don't care" but held my keyboard.

I rarely use to listen 102.1 unless I knew coach Wilder was gonna be on... now I find myself flipping between the 2 stations hoping to hear something of interest. Lately, I've been listening to music on my drive home from work instead of "Sports Talk." Hopefully with football season about to start, I'll hear more ODU related subject matter from Nick and Johnny.

I agree about him having a guest once in a while. Even if it's someone he has a connection with, just somebody. His rant today about how important all these matchups in week 2 are with the Redskins and Bears was laughable. Who cares, it's the preseason. Noone cares who Deangelo Hall matches up with in the slot or how vital it is for some 5th string running back to establish a run threat. I don't honestly believe he thinks it's relevant. He was building it up like it was for the NFC Championship.

Borrrrrring......

Maybe I am spoiled here in the lowly Richmond market, but there are two guys, Greg Burton and Wes McElroy, who are both excellent.

Cattles is a national-like all sports 'talker' like Dan Patrick or Colin Cowherd; but without the insight or the entertainment value of either.
Nick offers nothing in the way of information that I didn't already get on morning drive national radio.

I am sorry, but I will say what many of you cannot bring yourself to admit:
Fat Tony; while outrageous, controversial, and oafish at times, was more locally oriented and far more entertaining than Nick Cattles.

I have to agree. I listened to Cattles once, and concluded there was no there there, and stopped tuning in. But I've got to give the guy a break. He doesn't know the lay of the land down here yet. Maybe in a few months he'll get the point. If he doesn't, he should get the boot.

Time to **** or get off of the pot.

Richmond's local sports personalities are knowledgeable, competent, and engaging.

Honeymoon is over, either put out or get out.

I'd agree that he is more locally oriented which is a main factor, however I wouldn't say he is more entertaining. Tony was just such a hick. If he didn't breathe exclusively through his mouth maybe he'd still have the show.

RE: Nick Cattles?
Regarding his rant on the MLB and PED's:
He kept complaining that he doesn't trust the MLB anymore. He kept saying that everyone said that the MLB has the toughest testing program but that he is disgusted by it.

I kept screaming at the radio "WTF?". It was the MLB's testing program that caught Melky Cabrerra, no? Why the heck is he complaining?

Here's the deal. These radio "personalities" believe that they must take a side in a topic. And the side they take should be the one that will spur the most interest so that listeners will turn into callers and voice their opposition. Let's face it, most people voice thier opinions when they disagree or were treated wrongly than when they agree or were treated well. But that's BS when it comes to radio talk shows. Why can't they just argue both sides and ask the listeners which side they are on? Why make me hate you?

TALK FASTER. I DON'T HAVE ALL DAY.

I kind of thought we'd get someone from the north and they WOULD talk fast. This guy might talk slower than my South Carolina kin.

At least with fatman you could tune in and always expect to hear him say something stupid for a good laugh. This guy bores the hell out of me. I was really hoping we'd get two guys together. So much better than him talking about the same garbage for 2 hours straight. His pauses bother me a lot too

I agree that he stays on one topic for WAY too long. There is no reason that he should talk about a particular topic for an hour and a half. If he doesn't pick up more local conversation, he's going to lose his audience. I get a sense that he knows that too. I have been hearing more of an emphasis on the Redskins and Nationals lately.

He's pretty savvy with social media. I wouldn't doubt he is aware of most sites/forums.

RE: Nick Cattles?
He's still new and getting accentuated to the lay of the land.

Give him a year or so to actually WATCH and ATTEND Monarch athletic events. He's yet to see a single ODU basketball or football game in person.

He missed out on the Admirals run to the Calder Cup. All he has to talk about locally right now are the Tides, Gaby Douglas and what, Mike Vick? Preseason football?

Once ODU starts playing games and the NFL gets into full swing I think he will do a better job. I'm willing to give him the time to get invested in his new home so he can do a better job discussing it.

How many of you could move to, oh, let's say, Omaha Nebraska and start discussing local/national sports in that market?

He's not from here and he started his job at one of the biggest lulls in the sports calender when there is no NBA or college bball, no NFL or NCAA FB, no hockey and the dog days of August MLB.

Give him at least til the end of football season/beginning of ODU bball season to see if the show picks up.

He's already better than fatman simply because I don't want to rip my ears out when listening to him, even if he is a danger of putting me to sleep behind the wheel.

I still really do regret not applying for the job. 2 of my frat brothers and I did a weekly sports talk show at Randolph Macon for the 2 years I was there. Still have the tapes and the recordings. I think we would have been hilarious but probably a little too risque/over the top for a station like 94.1 with a connection to ESPN.

I'm sure they'd frown on "calls" from Dale Earnhardt's ghost and OJ Simpson. (what we had to work with back then lol).

I still think we could push the line of controversial without being awful like fatman. Oh well, missed chance. If Cattles ever needs a sidekick, I'll definitely apply for that job.

I do indeed have the gift of gab lol.

Hah, Dale Earnhardt's ghost... I would have tuned in for that. And I agree, like I said at the beginning I'm still a glass half full and waiting till he gets acclimated.
