At least with tony you never knew what he was going to say next, good or bad. Nick literally is a cookie cutter of any half ass national wannabe show. zzzzzzzz. Coach is an absolute joke, he sounds like a giggly woman, and Johnny D's "insider info" is a joke. I'd take tony over all of them.
I'd prefer to live my life with chlamydia than have Tony back on the air.
Myself and 2 of my frat brothers at Randolph Macon (go PiKA!) ran a weekly talk show for 2 hours a night. We only did it one night a week, and obviously filling 3 hours every day is much harder, but having said that, it wasn't THAT hard to be entertaining.
This was back around 1999-2000 so we would have some of our various frat brothers call in as "celebrities" and have mock interviews with them (since we obviously weren't going to get the real thing). We pushed the envelope a little when dale Earnhardt's "ghost" called in after Daytona. We also had a fantastic "interview" with norv turner after he got canned as the coach of the redskins.
Of course, it's much easier to be edgy when you are doing college radio and don't have to worry in the least about offending sponsors or listeners (because the only people listening were our frat brothers to either help us or screw with us).
Of course, we did have one real interview and I'm sure it was the highlight of his career thus far, we got RMC's basketball coach at the time, Mike Rhoades, who is now vcu's assistant coach to do an actual live interview with us. I was actually surprised how easy it was to come up with questions to ask him.
You just have to have some creativity and genuine interest in the subject. Cattles la ks both unless he is talking about Boston sports. Tony was the same with St. Louis teams, you could tell he really cared about the cardinals and his "pizan" (spelling?) tony larussa but he really stopped giving a crap about odu sports well before he was fired. He also lacked any creativity in coming up with good questions to ask his guests, he never went below epidermis deep inquiries like "how are you today?" and "have you ever eaten at (insert name of good restraunt in city interviewee is playing in)?"
Then he would just yell at his callers who dared question his knowledge and dug deeper into his "hole of stupid", as I like to call it.
I really do think my buddies and I could do a better job than cattles and mercurio but that's like saying "hey, I can cook a better meal than that guy who just served you a plate of warm microwaved cat crap"........at least we'd be more entertaining. And as you can tell from the length of most of my posts, I highly doubt we'd run out of things to talk about, whether they are interesting to everyone or just us would be the real question.
