For a bunch of people who say they couldn't stand Tony, there sure are a lot of quoting and remember when comments in this thread.

I'm not a fan of my ex-wife, but I sure can comment a bunch on her if you're interested.

Tony was bad.

I remember paying for my Homewrecker at Moe's Grill when the cashier said "Oh no, we're gonna run out of food". Without turning around, I knew who he was talking about and sure enough it was Mercurio.

I never, ever, ever thought I would say this.

Mercurio is better than Cattles and the Coach on 102.1. I don't like Mercurio, and I'm not sure bringing him back would be good if ODU is ticked off at him.

Our afternoon sports talk is so bad now I'm thinking of signing back up for Sirius/XM. Johnny D wasn't perfect but he was a lot better than the Coach.

RE: Nick Cattles?
I don't envy any local sports show host in a market such as ours that lacks any hometown major league team. It can be tricky here, because although there is a large contingent that views the DC teams as the home team (especially the Redskins,) there are probably more people combined who together root for various other teams. All of us are Monarchs fans, but there are also a lot of fans who root for various other college programs as well. I'm sure it can be difficult to please everybody.

My take on Tony M. is that he seems to represent the embodiment of the seven deadly sins. He's all of them, supersized. He's crass, treats his callers poorly, knows it all, is lecherous towards women, etc. In a way TM kind of makes listeners feel better about themselves by way of comparison. A universal foil. It's kind of why shows like Jerry Springer's have become so popular. He provides people someone to collectively point at and say "yeah, I screw up sometimes, and can be a bit of a jerk, but at least I'm not as bad as that guy."

Never thought I'd say it either but I'd take tony back tomorrow over nick. At least with tony you never knew what he was going to say next, good or bad. Nick literally is a cookie cutter of any half ass national wannabe show. zzzzzzzz. Coach is an absolute joke, he sounds like a giggly woman, and Johnny D's "insider info" is a joke. I'd take tony over all of them.

Myself and 2 of my frat brothers at Randolph Macon (go PiKA!) ran a weekly talk show for 2 hours a night. We only did it one night a week, and obviously filling 3 hours every day is much harder, but having said that, it wasn't THAT hard to be entertaining.

This was back around 1999-2000 so we would have some of our various frat brothers call in as "celebrities" and have mock interviews with them (since we obviously weren't going to get the real thing). We pushed the envelope a little when dale Earnhardt's "ghost" called in after Daytona. We also had a fantastic "interview" with norv turner after he got canned as the coach of the redskins.

Of course, it's much easier to be edgy when you are doing college radio and don't have to worry in the least about offending sponsors or listeners (because the only people listening were our frat brothers to either help us or screw with us).

Of course, we did have one real interview and I'm sure it was the highlight of his career thus far, we got RMC's basketball coach at the time, Mike Rhoades, who is now vcu's assistant coach to do an actual live interview with us. I was actually surprised how easy it was to come up with questions to ask him.

You just have to have some creativity and genuine interest in the subject. Cattles la ks both unless he is talking about Boston sports. Tony was the same with St. Louis teams, you could tell he really cared about the cardinals and his "pizan" (spelling?) tony larussa but he really stopped giving a crap about odu sports well before he was fired. He also lacked any creativity in coming up with good questions to ask his guests, he never went below epidermis deep inquiries like "how are you today?" and "have you ever eaten at (insert name of good restraunt in city interviewee is playing in)?"

Then he would just yell at his callers who dared question his knowledge and dug deeper into his "hole of stupid", as I like to call it.

I really do think my buddies and I could do a better job than cattles and mercurio but that's like saying "hey, I can cook a better meal than that guy who just served you a plate of warm microwaved cat crap"........at least we'd be more entertaining. And as you can tell from the length of most of my posts, I highly doubt we'd run out of things to talk about, whether they are interesting to everyone or just us would be the real question.

RE: Nick Cattles?
Tony is an absolute hick and the principle of him getting air time is too sickening to want him back. Nick on the other hand is just a blow hard. The other day when Tebow was signed to the Patriots he spent 60 minutes of the show bragging that 2 months ago New England was one of the 15 teams where he thought Tebow would potentially be signed. Cattles doesn't focus on local sports or ODU like the fat man did though. (even if Tony's focus of ODU shamefully skewed towards the Lady Monarchs) If i wanted national radio I'd listen to The Loose Cannons or The Dan Patrick Show.

Anyone else hate when Cattles uses part of Wood Selig's interview to ask him questions about national sports news? Last week he asked Selig about the former OSU president's comments.

I'd wondered about this. Is this speculation or do you know for sure that this was the straw that broke the camel's back?

You guys gut to let Cad els get bed er.
He only repeats Mike and Mike for 45 minutes per topic.
He was once talking about Dwight Howard, I went shopping, got back in the car a hour later.... still talking about Dwight Howard.
Doesn't he get that you get more diverse interest by talking about 6-7 topics in 3 hours than 2-3 topics in three hours?

I had a sports show online for about 2 years up until about 6 months ago as life got in the way. I've had Bazemore, Hassell, Lieberman and Bacote on the show to name a few. As well as other guests outside of ODU. I have a connection at 102.1 that I could do an hour show on Saturdays of something with some sponsorship help. Been considering a CUSA show centered around ODU. Thoughts?

RE: Nick Cattles?
Cattles has been a pretty big disappointment, though I'll give him this fall to see if he actually embraces ODU football or if it's just a pit stop in between 30 minutes of chatter about how the Patriots TE situation is unfolding.

But don't think that Mercurio loved local sports out of some sense of altruism or greater good. He didn't care about the Tides until he was on their payroll. Going further back, he ONLY cared about the Lady Monarchs back when it was The Score 1310 and the men were somewhere else on the AM dial (WTAR? WNIS?). If he lands on another station, be it 102.1 or some tiny AM desperately casting about for a calling card, "local sports" will be whatever the station is airing, and any chatter about ODU will be minimal and probably a little bitter. Unless said station picks up ODU sports, then all will be milk and honey once more.

I think he got exposed once and for all as an ODU poser the day word of the CUSA move came out. He liked to pimp himself as this leading authority of insider information when it came to ODU, but you could tell the news knocked him on his consideriable rump. He was all but begging Selig to call him on the air while whining about how horrible this move was, and he couldn't even coalesce around a reason why it was so bad (in one breath he was complaining about the extra travel for the Lady Monarchs, the next breath he was saying that they should wait for the Big East because the JMU play by play guy said they were good enough to make the move). It was tragicomical.

Tony Mercurio's main concerns are filling his wallet and his gullet. Which is fine, every man has his reason to be. But don't delude yourself into thinking he cares about local sports because of the redeeming power of local sports. It's just a poorly-executed, disrespectful, willfully-ignorant, myopic, unprofessional means to an end.

RE: Nick Cattles?
Honest question has cattles attended an odu football game yet? When was he hired from Boston? Was it before or after the playoffs were over for fcs?

If he was hired after, and his only experience with odu was last years odu basketball team, I could actually see why he's not interested in discussing odu. Hell most of us diehards could barely stand discussing them.

Maybe once he takes in a few football games, providing he can get a ticket, he'll understand what his core audience wants. Guess well see.
