Why do you care so much about what the Big East teams get two years from now?

I don't. Don't mean I don't like to debate about it either.......

EJ, Chris Bevilacqua, who the big east hired to help negotiate a new TV
contract, was asked about those reporting low ball $$$, and he flat out said they have an agenda.

Actually, he said that anyone that reports $$$ at this point has an agenda. That applies to optimistic numbers as well.

Safe to say you have no idea what the Big East is going to get paid in the next TV deal?

Heading on College Football Live with Joe Tessitore at 3:30pm ET on ESPN to discuss the Big East's hire of Mike Aresco

Even ESPN talking heads can't slam this hire.

Then again........

IMO, it's a misnomer to call it a "nationwide" football conference. I would expect that a nationwide conference would have a few teams with a nationwide following. Not a bunch of schools with a limited regional following all joining up to "call themselves" a nationwide conference.

And no, I don't think that any of the new schools have enough pull in their own home cities to provide a subscriber increase. UT is the king of Texas football and they can barely get their own channel going in the state they "own". How is SMU or Houston going to get NBCSN an increase? How is Temple going to get an increase in Philly where they are generally considered an afterthought?

Quote:Do not be fooled. Despite the bleatings of the sheep on ESPN, as a TV property, the Big East is very valuable.

I'm not fooled. The Big East has ALWAYS had the big markets. It did nothing for them previous, with either TV or the bowls. It's not like the BE hasn't been fighting this for years. They will continue to fight this until they can prove that their own teams can carry the cities that they "represent".

I think in the bolded part above you have inadvertantly run squarely into the truth. While Texas is the most popular team in Texas, they dont "control" the market. TV's in Houston dont shut off when the Texas game is over. Houston, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech all have good followings in Houston. Houston, as a former member of the SW Conference actually pulls respectable ratings in other major Texas cities. The reality is that no school controls any large metro area. Their populations are too diverse. However, they can grab a significant number of TV's in a large market and thats what the Big East will be selling.

Here's one positive Big East piece from ESPN and her sources have a name.

Quote:“If the Big East schools hang together, I believe they can secure a new TV deal equal to or better than the last offer from ESPN, because the media competition for their rights will be intense.”

10:30 am at New York Athletic Club.

Will most likely be streamed online at BE's website.

That is exactly the approach the PAC 12 took prior to its negotiations.

Guys, I can't remember the last time we had an unambiguously day of good press for this conference--even with the announcements of all you newbies there was an undercurrent of "well, that's nice, but this is still a league that lost four of its members" and there are still morons like Tim Brando claiming that Boise and SDSU are never going to play a down in the Big East. But...yeah. Unambiguously good news followed by unambiguously good press. Not sure how I'm supposed to feel. Is this...happiness? Can I still have some Big East self-loathing?

Believe me I totally understand. 04-cheers

Okay but JUST FOR TODAY. Then I go back to the self-loathing/expecting disaster/waiting for Aresco to somehow screw everything up.

Happy with the hire. Here is why I think it is positive:

1. He is out of the box type hire. He is not related to Providence.
2. He understands and knows key people in TV business.
3. He knows value of media assets and how to maximize them.
4. He lives in CT where ESPN and NBCSP HQs are located.
5. He lives next to NYC.
6. He is an UCONN alum. Ok, not all of you care about that but it does not hurt he went to a league school. I hope he will attend all of the UCONN games.

I agree with all that, and I'll add a few more.

7. He headed up a lot of programming for ESPN, and was part of the management team in the 90s that built up ESPN's brand, and made it a force in the world of athletics.

8. He was a co-creator of CSTV.

9. He was the architect of the deal between CBS and the SEC.

10. He was the architect of the deal between CBS and the NCAA for Basketball.

11. Not a single person has said a bad word about Aresco in the media. If they were going to do it, it would have been done already, IMO.

12. He knows every conference commissioner, and is reportedly well respected by all.

13. He likely made a helluva lot more money at CBS, so this is a labor of love for him.

14. In his very first interview on ESPN, he did a great job, and went on the offensive, saying he would be "relentless" in defending the BE, and in helping secure its place in the "BIG 6."

I could go on and on, but let's just say this is a shockingly creative and unreal hire. Better than a home run. More like a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, in the 7th game of the World Series.

I caught about the last 7 minutes, but missed the rest. Anybody watch it straight through who can give us a recap, before they eventually post it online?

One thought I had watching the tail end of this is that it's nice to see the Big East run by adults who know what they're talking about, for a change, and project a positive, and professional, image.
