Finebaum: Larry Blakeney
I've seen a few hudspeth, malzhan and mccarney threads, so I thought I'd post something from the dothan eagle on another great SBC coach. The sunbelt will have a good coach in Larry Blakeney for at least for a few more years. He's a great guy if you ever meet him in person.

On Troy’s Larry Blakeney: “I think he’s one of the most underrated coaches in college football history. I really think the job he’s done – and I know last year was unusual – but it’s been a phenomenal story. I’m a huge Larry Blakeney fan. He took the fall for coach (Pat) Dye and for others and it did cost him. He undoubtedly would have been at an SEC school, probably Mississippi State, maybe somewhere else. … I think not only would he have gotten a job, he would have been really good. He has a way with young people that I think is rare in college athletics. Whenever he leaves Troy and people stop and think of what he did and what he’s built there, it’s going to be one of the more amazing stories in college football history at that level. It’s a phenomenal story.” - Paul Finebaum

RE: Finebaum: Larry Blakeney
Its unfortunate that what leads in sports stories is the Meyers and Sabans and not the program builders who mentor young men

Yes, Larry Blakeney is a living legend. Some folks like to diss him for one reason or another, but the truth is he has taken a small school in the middle of nowhere, and turned us into a dominante Sun Belt program. He ushered us in to the FBS and has secured our place as a respected program known for winning championships and bowl rings.

Simple, because he has never said anything nice about Troy or Larry. Because of this fact, him saying this is news of the most shocking nature.

If I did my calculating correctly, Larry is 15-7 (.681) as a Division II coach, 84-26-1 (.761) as an FCS head coach and 65-58 (.528) as an FBS head coach and has never had consecutive losing seasons.

Troy had to take it's lumps as an Independent from 2001 to 2003. Those were tough schedules. 2002 alone featured Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa State, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Marshall, UAB, Utah State, and FAU... and then of course last year didn't help...

Piss on building a damn statue of him.

The only fans who love him so much are the ones who don't mind being a mediocre program and who are such extreme homers that they would proclaim loyalty to Hitler if he was our damn HC.

RE: Finebaum: Larry Blakeney
I dissagree 100%, and I am no moron. A homer, yes...but not someone who is unrealistic, uneducated, or lacking intelligence in any way. I support Blakeney because he has done more for Troy University than anyone else could have. Afterall, he IS in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for his work at Troy.
