UFC headlining fight on the UFC show on Fox. This is a huge fight for Vera.

Vera looked terrible in his last fight which I thought he lost. He doesn't deserve to headline a card at all but oh well. I'm still rooting for him.

After being out on his feet, he's weathered the storm and is right back in this fight.

Good showing by Brandon, but it's still a small step back at age 34.

RE: Wrestling Alum (1 year), Brandon Vera vs. Shogun Rua tonight
I wrestled with Brad in the 90s. He was a difficult guy to wrestle because of his size and unorthodox style. I was a little surprised to see Rua take him down the way he did. After watching his fights with Reece Andy & Randy Couture, and seeing how he was able to neutralize their takedowns, I thought he'd be able to defend Rua a little better. Perhaps he didn't prepare for Rua's takedowns as much as he should have. Yet, I think his time in the guard in the first 2 rounds really wore him down. Otherwise, I thought he was able to trade effectively on his feet.

I agree. I wish he would have kept going to his right, left, leg kick combo that was very effective. It looked like it was really taking a toll on Rua. Unfortunately, like you pointed out, he was on his back for a lot of time that he could have been chopping at Rua's leg.

I watched about 3 or 4 rounds before having to leave home, that was one brutal fight. One of our local affiliates was "piggybacking" off of another network to televise the fight. I don't usually watch UFC/MMA/Strikeforce (I'm actually afraid that the day I become a fan of it is when I sit down, watch a match and someone gets killed in the ring), but this one for some reason, caught my attention, moreso than boxing, that's for sure, after that bull**** with Pacquiao and Bradley, I've lost any consideration for the sport in its' present status, it's become a joke...They (Shogun and Brandon) were going at it pretty damn good...Who wound up winning?

Shogun won by TKO in the 4th round.

Now that you mention it, I saw that, just couldn't recall because it was late at night, the ref had to step in and stop it. Shogun looked concerned because Brandon was laid out on his back bleeding, I think from his forehead or nose. I hope he's alright, he put up a courageous battle. But this UFC stuff scares me, that someone is going to get killed in there. I hope to God I'm wrong.

Believe it or not it's one of the safest contact sports out there. Much safer than boxing. No standing 8 count, quick stoppages, & taps mitigate senseless abuse when opponents are woozy. Football & boxing actually pose bigger long term threats.

ODUSteeler has it right. Scientific research and data study to date back up the fact that there are many fewer head injuries (long term) for MMA fighters than boxing (or football) because there are fewer blows that are slamming the brain around inside the skull. Less glove weight may translate to a bloodier looking face, but from a concussive point of view, it's less force and less head trauma as well.
