Red Wolves' Malzahn Reached Out To Razorback Officials About Scheduling
by Chris Bahn
8/4/2012

Malzahn reached out to University of Arkansas athletic department officials about scheduling multiple times in May and June. Those calls, noted in documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request for Malzahn’s phone records, were made in an attempt to inquire about Arkansas’ policy of scheduling in-state opponents.

Officials at both schools confirmed the contact and purpose of the calls to ArkansasSports360.com.

Over the course of the brief conversations between the two parties, Arkansas communicated to Arkansas State and Malzahn that its decades-old policy had not changed. The schools have never met in football.

Whether or not the two programs should play has been debated for years in the state. Meetings between the Red Wolves and Razorbacks have been rare, limited primarily to Olympic sports and a pair of postseason basketball games.

It could happen. They're afraid they'll lose, especially now because chances are they will. I'm personally glad Vanderbilt doesn't have that problem... They've scheduled a series (H&H) against us even after our recent victories over the Dores (3 wins in a row!)

Glad to see Malzahn putting pressure on Arkansas to play them. Keep winning and keep pressuring them. They can't avoid you forever.

The only reason Vanderbilt agrees to play us is because of the tremendous pressure the Nashville area media and citizens put on them. We are too close to not play each other routinely.

Yes they can....they have the media, the politicians, and the hayseeds in lockstep paranoia.

The only thing that would change it is if the national media took notice and started laughing.....or if other SEC fan bases would notice and start laughing.

Which is where having Gus helps. He's a name the SEC fans are familiar with. If he makes enough stink or if you guys have a 10win season, the media won't ignore you.

No reason the piggies can't agree to an occasional game in Little Rock.

As long as they continue to have 100 percnt support of the state media and a majority of the legislature, they have every reason.

ASU has the governor, Arkansas has everbody else.

WKU and Kentucky have 2years left on a 4 year contract in football. After we beat them this year and next I fully expect that to end. Just like in basketball we beat them in 2001 and they have not scheduled us since.

I do give Louisville credit. We play on a regular basis. We start a new 4 year contact this year. As we will play in a sold out Bridgestone Arena in Nashville in 2012. Louisville we be rank in the top 5 when we play them. WKU leads the all time series 39 to 32.

I'm sorry, but chances are they will? Seriously? Arkansas is a top ten team and before the whole Petrino fiasco they were getting darkhorse NC talk. I'm sorry, but I don't think the firing of Petrino and the hiring of Malzahn is enough to say "chances are Arkansas would lose". Could the Red Wolves win that game? Sure, but c'mon, they would be a three touchdown underdog and would probably cover, but I don't think you can say they'd likely win.

Damn shame they won't schedule y'all. Considering the state of the national economy you'd think they'd want to keep as much money as possible in state. I'd love to see the Wolves get a shot at the Razorpigs.

On that note, seems weird to see WKU playing UL and UK in Nashville. Heh, maybe Arkansas St should offer to host the swine in Memphis.

it's not weird. Bowling Green is only 40 min north of Nashville and we have a large fan base their. Most of our fans enjoy the annual trips to Nashville. Plus it really pisses off Vandy and MTSU. COGS

Love that Malzahn did that. Hopefully Sheilds will do that for us in basketball, too. The answer may be no, but keep pestering them, if only for the fun of it. :)
