If it's true he was unarmed and running away, then of course the police should be punished. Neighborhood anger is justified.

At the same time... being a criminal street gang member with a rap sheet tends to land you in these unfortunate predicaments. Don't want to be on the wrong end of some trigger-happy cop (or rival gangbanger)? Then maybe choose a wiser path and don't pepper your resume with crimes.

For keepers of the peace, there seem to be an awful lot of folks in blue willing to escalate matters.

When you're in a confrontation, your options are to escalate or defuse. The drunk, the idiot, the psycho, the teenager, will escalate. It's the cop's friggin' job to defuse.

They were protesting ... but there were no police. Police showed to break it up with a K-9 unit, riot gear, and rubber bullets. Two of those three would have been lethal to the babies.

There were no police because no permit was filed. If no one can reimburse the police department for police overtime, the only alternative would have been to pull police from their normal patrols. The police couldn't call someone to break-up the protest because no one officially stood up and said he/she was responsible for the security of the event. So, I feel that they were kind-of forced into breaking up the protest themselves.

The police overreacted, handled the breakup clumsily, and it is inexcusable if the police did not use megaphones to tell people to disperse before moving in (anyone with a kid would have left at that point). However, this event and the similar issues with Occupy Oakland really reinforce the need to file permits to help ensure a smooth protest.
