The commissioner did indicate that the league might be interested in adding a Texas school or schools. He said the league visited with UT-San Antonio, which is joining Conference USA, and received material from Texas State. Conference USA member Texas-El Paso is also an intriguing candidate for the Mountain West.

"If, for whatever reason, they tire of traveling to Miami and Charlotte and Norfolk, Virginia, we would have conversations with them," Thompson said, referencing the locations of several new Conference USA members.

That didnt say that the MWC was eyeing Texas State...it said Texas State was eyeing the MWC, and the MWC didnt seem that interested...

That's why I put a question mark in the title. It said the MWC wants Texas teams. UTSA and UTEP leaving CUSA is not likely (in my opinion). That leaves one school. Texas State.

Sounds to me like C-USA pulled a fast one on the MWC and has all but locked them out of the state of Texas. Now the MWC has almost no expansion options other than FCS schools (only real options there are Montana and by default Montana State as well), maybe Texas State, and 2 schools (Idaho, and NMSU) that they just told they have no interest in.

The Big East will likely expand with one MWC school, if they can't convince BYU to join. That will be either AFA or Fresno. Boise and SDSU want another western team. That leaves the MWC down a team. They will try to get one from somewhere.

They were already offered by Sunbelt and MWC but they chose C-USA.

I would think NMSU would be calling the MWC weekly, if not daily.

Idaho too, but it seems that everyone thinks they dont bring enough value to justify an invite.

I do not recall UTSA being offered by the MWC. The article referenced says the MWC did visit UTSA. UTSA was offered by both the SBC and CUSA.

Per the article,Texas State was not visited by the MWC and apparently has not been contacted by the MWC. Texas State did make contact with the MWC and did send materials for MWC review. I do not see Texas State as a target until all attempts to lure UTEP have failed.

The MWC wants UTEP and if they can get UTEP plus one other Texas school to keep UTEP happy, then the MWC would probably be very interested in expanding.

They joined the WAC with basically the same teams that now make up the MWC.
I would think they would have more in common with the Western schools, and would desire a higher profile conference.

No I think they would have more in common with the rest of C-USA west, as it has 4 Texas schools, an OK school, and 2 LA schools.

UTSA was offered by the MWC. There were several articles in the SA Express News about this. They were also offerered by CUSA and chose CUSA. They had their choice of MWC or CUSA. This was well documented by the Express News. There were other articles that said they were offered by the Sun Belt, CUSA, and MWC.

I could see Texas State considering MWC. Wouldn't make a ton of sense though given the MWC's shrinking tv contract.

If the MWC offers TX ST, they'll accept in a heartbeat. If UTEP were to go the MWC as well, CUSA would backfill with MT. That would mean the SBC would have lost two more members. I figure the SBC would then invite NMSU and Idaho.
