How many schools can you name in the MEAC? See what I mean. Nothing wrong with the Accademics, both are accreditted by the same Accrediting agency. Nothing wrong with them, except a much lower conference, all stemming from their past history with other like schools.

As other posters have listed The Boohoos, and the Vaganyatekies recruit big time in the 757 (local area code and a local nickname for the area). Both receive almost equal billing in the Pilotonline here with ODU. Now, with the Monarchs becoming only the 3rd BCS school in the State, I expect a slight increase in awareness througout the state. Having played the W&Ms, the Richmond's, the VCU's, the JMU's, and GMUs of the CAA, from the State, we are still looked down on and frowned upon as soon as you drive North 50 miles to Williamsburg. Other schools such as Radford, VMI, & Longwood are not well represented throughout the State. Not that Charlottesville and Blacksburg are big markets, but their marketing people have done an excellent job of flooding the local sports stores with their apparel. There is not enough ODU apparel around Norfolk and surrounding cities, and fans who wear such, have to really be looking for ODU gear.

I hope we have helped you! I can't wait to play you guys again, in all sports! Even if it may be cross-divisional!

You have! Very much! Thank you and I'm very much looking forward to the competitition. I couldn't help but to 03-lmfao at the "pet" names you have for who I assume is VT and UVA ("boohoos" & "Vanganyatekies?" - Please, you have to share the origins of these names with me) In this state, the majority of football fans call Auburn & alabama, "Barners and Bammers." I like "Hatfields and McCoys", personally.

Pet names are fun, I think VT's most popular one is the Chokies. For UVA just rhyme something with 'Hoos' and bingo you're golden. Boo Hoos, The Whos?, etc. My favorite for VCU so for is Virginia Curbstomp University.

Also I'd have to say that's the first time I've heard of the "Vanganyatekies"... interesting to say the least.

Could be worse. I lived in Philadelphia from 1997 - 2001 and I didn't realise Drexel had a D-1 basketball team until they joined the CAA.

All in all, I'd say coverage is pretty good. Of course the ACC, the only BCS conference in the market, is going to overshadow us at times, but we get a lot of coverage and a lot of front page and feature action on TV and print. As we continue to generate interest, we will get more coverage. They are out to sell newspapers and TV viewership. Unfortunately, we are still at the point where is VT and ODU both make news on the same day, VT will usually get the front page, particularly on the football side. Hopefully that will change over time. 15 years ago, UVA was top dog and VT was getting the meager coverage UVA now gets.

Sure appreciate you stopping by to chime in. Good morning! Here's another thing that raises my "red flag" with the BCS & at times, the sports media. Don't you hate that term, "football conference" or "basketball conference?" Kind of minimizes or marginalizes your athletic prowess. That's the overall perception of the ACC, even though IMO, there are some pretty competitive football programs in it, the BCS is nothing more than football's version of a "beauty contest." Look at how they've turned on the Big East, & the ACC's not far from their list of "expendables", either. I think they're on borrowed time, but, schools that are not part of this exclusive club/clique are looked upon in all sports as nothing more than "plain janes" or "ugly ducklings.", & to use an old slang term from a departed friend of mine, "they wrong for that!"

Until a 16-team playoff format is introduced and includes representation of teams from every Division 1A conference, this BCS postseason structure is total 04-bs (see the back cover of Dan Wetzel's book, "Death To The BCS" - It's the perfect formula for the way a national championship should be determined.)...

RE: Sports Media Vibe For Old Dominion...
I remember when VT was better known as "VPI" & used the nickname, "Gobblers", and the so-called "powerhouse" schools down here kept them on their schedule and chalked up an easy win time after time. Since they've evolved into what is known today and over the last decade or decade and a half, neither AU or ua are so inclined to take them on every year anymore. I love this line from the movie, "Truth Or Consequences, NM." - "when you're running on fear, don't stop for gas..."

It was actually VPISU, or vippysue!

I had heard the name Vaganyatek years ago, and tekies seems to fit, as does chokies! A Hokie, from my years of a combination of hatred, and loathing, and extremely good observation is a Castrated Turkey!

To get to Blacksburg, (home of VaTech) you travel to the end of the world, turn right, and just keep going! It's not anywhere near a decent airport for opponents to fly into. Unless you count Roanoke.

Wooville is a little more than that but it at least has history, (Established by Thomas Jefferson) and my Sis and bro-in-law graduated, and were married there.

03-lmfao You caused me to recall a post over at Blazertalk a few days ago by one of our fellow UAB fans in regards to what he thought of Troy University, an ascending rival of the Blazers in football. He was none too kind in his conveyance, it was hilarious, though. We open up with them on September 1.

If we are onto oppposing team's nicknames....

"Barneys" - James Madison University, as it applies to the look of their mascot. THrown around most often by University of Richmond fans.
"Ticks" - University of Richmond. A lower form of life compared to a spider.
"Bill and Gary" - William and Mary, assumedly after thri election of a male homecoming queen.
"Violent Criminals University" - Normally spoken by ODU fans towards VCU
"ODUi" - A new one for Old Dominion in light of some recent events.

Thanks for contributing solid discussion on our board. It is much appreciated.

Actually, Charlottesville was founded by a man named Walker. Just finished re-reading "Undaunted Courage" (about the Lewis & Clark expedition) and one of the people Meriwether Lewis meets before they embark was the son of the guy who founded C-ville..... Only way I know that.....

My name for VCU is Crayola U!

As far as the transgender homecoming queen I work for 2 men who are alums and they call it "William is Mary"

My names for JMU are: JMpoo, the Purple Pu$$ies. Dolly Tech! Truck Stop U. Rest Stop U. Hopeless by the Highway! Diesel Fumers! I-81.

My pleasure, I appreciate everyone's feedback, you all have been tremendous. I am 03-lmfao at the nicknames you posted here. Let's see if I can recall any others we use or have been observed around here occasionally:

UA - "Gumps", "Poindexters", "Bammers" (for the way most of them sound on the air when they call into sports talk radio stations, "I'm a big alabammer fan!", & it's true, some of them actually have the nerve to answer personal phone calls at home or work, instead of saying "hello", they will fix their mouths to say, "roll tide" instead) "Updykes"(for the alabama fan that allegedly poisoned a sacred grove of trees on the Auburn campus), "Drunken Bahrs"(In 'honor' of former coach "bear" bryant, one of the worst enemies this city ever had), "Criminal Turds"(for a number of incidents involving players scuffling with police, selling drugs in the stadium parking lot, attempting to rob a student at gunpoint while wearing a houndstooth hat, etc.) "Teabag Nation" (for what an alabama fan did to a passed out LSU fan at a Krystal restaurant earlier this year and had the gall to videotape it and I think it was placed on YouTube)...

Mississippi State - "Moo-U" (Starkville is pretty much nothing but prime grazing land, plus their football fans all bring cowbells to the games)

Troy - "The Marching Condoms"(in relation to their mascot, the Trojans)

Mississippi - "Ole Piss" (nuff said!)

Being an arachnaphobic, I'm wondering how in the world can a university embrace a spider as its school mascot?

Troy Trojans....
A Trojan horse is something you willingly let into your living area only to later find out that it is filled with dangerous hidden malefactors that destroy your inner being sometimes at the molecular level....
With that being understood... why is it a name of a condom?

Smitty, Please, where did ODUi come from?

On the "Bammers" it almost goes without saying. In my travels down to SEC country, FB is king, and all the radio air waves are full of talking heads, Asst. Head Coaches Shows, Coaches Shows, Pre-game Shows, Game, Post Game Shows, More talking heads, Coaches Interview Shows, and of course: Team Hi-Lite shows!

Bammers is kind of like how V a g a n y a t e k came about. It's kind of like the sound of pure Southern Hick-talk! And sounds very much like a part of the anatomy!

Troy - "The Marching Condoms"(in relation to their mascot, the Trojans)

I take some offense to the Troy reference since I completed 1/2 of a Graduate program at the Military Extension office of Troy State as it was called. But I haven't followed the program much! Some offense, but not much. There is no way you would've known!

Being an arachnaphobic, I'm wondering how in the world can a university embrace a spider as its school mascot?

Matrix, that is a great question! It makes for a lot of Kill Spiders cat-calls at games!

Kind of like asking about the Campbell Camels!

03-lmfao All in good fun, "Backrow!" Troy fans give us "the business" every chance they get...I love rivalry games. Far as Richmond goes, maybe I'll go to one of their games disguised as a can of "Raid."

Might not get out of there in one piece if I did that. Crazy story to share with you. I told the truth about being arachnaphobic, I cannot stand the sight of spiders - period! I don't even like looking at them on those nature documentaries, and when I cross paths with one in person, it's "fight or flight" mode with me. Same thing with snakes!

Having a pair of close encounters last year with a Red Back and a Black Widow did nothing to change my perspective one bit...But, I'm also a huge comic book/cartoon superhero buff...My all-time favorite? Spider Man...Go figure...

We have Rich Radford's replacement. Harry Minium is returning to a sports beat. I say anyone who actually attended the monumental Maury/Granby game on Thanksgiving day 1966 (estimates of over 33,000 in attendance!) is a good guy to cover ODU football. Now if we can get Ed Miller to give us BB lovers some summer scoops!
