Media Treatment/Coverage Inquiry
Good morning, Thundering Herd (how ironic, even though my high school alma mater's colors are purple and white, that's our mascot's name). I was wondering how your local media covers and treats Marshall Athletics? I'm very curious to find out what level of treatment and press features are provided for the various cultures of Conference USA.
Most UAB fans are of the observation that the Blazers are not getting sufficient acknowledgement from our local/state sports media, myself being one of them. If you could put a grade on the level of media coverage given Marshall and for that matter, Conference USA in your area, what would it be and why? If not, is there a concerted effort to change that, and what alternatives to the local media are at your disposal if they're not satisfactory in meeting this need?
Your feedback, indulgence and shared perspective on this subject is great appreciated...Good luck to the Herd in 2012. Looking forward to our upcoming football matchup.

RE: Media Treatment/Coverage Inquiry
Marshall I think has great coverage in the Huntington/Charleston area. We even have a show/beat writer on a WV 'Eer radio network.
MU Sports - The Herald Dispatch, Huntington, WV
Huntington News, Huntington, WV
The Charleston Gazette, Charleston, WV
The Charleston Daily Mail, Charleston, WV
Derek Redd Blog, The Charleston Daily Mail
The Stampede, WV Metro News
*MUSports at the HD is where Marshall gets the most coverage. There are several writers that write about Marshall here.
*Huntington New is spartic at best. I usually don't check it unless someone posts a link to it.
*The Charleston Gazette and Daily Mail have a Marshall beat writer and when season is in you can usually find atleast one article a day and in the off season maybe 2-3 a week.
*The Daily Mail's beat writer also has a blog and you can find tidbits about practice, wrong doings, press conferences, whos coming and going here.
*The Stampede at WV Metro News is done by a Marshall grad and is the only part of metro news dedicated to Marshall. WV Metro news is a WHO (wvu) owned site.

@HerdZoned. Thank you so much. This reads like a treasure chest of media coverage.

The Beckley newspaper also has decent coverage during the season.

So does The Ironton Tribune. We as Marshall fans complain that the state is all about the Who, and most times we are right. But we really do have a fair amout of coverage from the state. We just aren't a paragraph on page 9C of the sports section of the newspaper.

We get at least 20 articles per week, and can double that when FB and BB are active.

Thank you, "Blade"...I don't think outside of the secondary outlets, UAB comes close to that many articles on a weekly basis. Hell, we're fortunate if it's twice a month around here!

Heard some of Coach Holliday's comments this morning on C-USA Media Day online. Wish I could have caught it all, but I'm in the middle of a rat race environment and there's no way I'll be able to savor the flavor of this whole thing here. Caught the last few minutes of Ruffin McNeil's dialogue concerning East Carolina and their goals for the season.

Yes, we are pretty fortunate to have good coverage. Some of our fans b!tch about that too, so I guess it's all relative.
Thanks for stopping by!
