Equal Time! (Media Coverage Of East Carolina Athletics & Conference USA)
Good morning, Pirate Nation. Hope all is great with you as a new season of football edges another day closer. One of the most obvious obstacles that our athletic program and the conference as a whole has had to contend with in its' representative area is the sparse, pretty much dismissing kind of overall coverage UAB gets from the sports media, that includes the whole shebang, print, radio, TV, etc. Numerous times, myself and other UAB fans have had to go out of our way to remind them, especially in the sports talk radio circuit, that UAB actually exists, on a far-too-often basis. They're so fixated on the BCS and the SEC ad nauseum, and try to convey the excuse that "no one is interested" in Conference USA, UAB, or any other mid-major entities, and I just can't/won't buy that. In an attempt to gather some vibe from other Conference USA cultures, was wondering how the media in your market recieves and covers East Carolina sports, who, if any, gives the most respect in regards to coverage and who treats ECU like a non-factor, & if this is the case, how is it dealt with in Greenville? Would love to get your thoughts and feedback, and thanks in advance for your indulgence...East Carolina - "No Quarter Given"...UAB - "None Taken"...

RE: Equal Time! (Media Treatment/Coverage Of East Carolina...
While Greenville is a small market, the local media does a decent job covering the Pirates. The Daily Reflector (Greenville's daily paper) and the network affiliates do a decent job of covering ECU. There's also a talk radio station that has some good stuff. (The newly elected mayor of Greenville is on one of the shows). However, a lot of grads move back to Raleigh or Charlotte, and the coverage isn't nearly as good there. I know in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill ECU is behind Carolina and State (and Duke during basketball season). I can't really speak on the situation in Charlotte, but I imagine it's pretty much the same.

THE SUBJECT IS TOO LONG ETC ETC HAD IT EDIT IT ETC ETC
For a long time, we got better coverage in the national media than the Raleigh/Durham media. Now we still aren't getting quite the coverage that we think is fair, but they can't ignore us any longer and have to talk about us more than they are really comfortable doing.

Thank you for this offering. Is it safe to say that ECU may have pushed the "fear button" of some of these pro-BCS media types that don't want to see the Pirates evolve into the competitive and exciting gridiron program they are today? Exactly what most of these media morons in Birmingham don't want to see take place with UAB. One thing I've grown to learn over the years has been, win or lose, support your own. Birmingham does not do that & many of them get downright defensive whenever you press them about their lack of coverage for UAB and Conference USA, even something newsworthy is happening, they're stuck on stupid, and just simply don't want to acknowledge our existence ...They'd rather chase behind the crimson tide and the SEC, none of which do a thing for this city.

This is incredible. I have never known for the mayor of any given community until now to involve themselves with a collegiate sports program in this manner. What's so sad about us in this regard, is that the mayor of the city of birmingham is actually a UAB graduate, but, IMO, clearly has "divided loyalties", and if you ask me if "Big Al" (the alabama mascot) & "Blaze" (UAB's mascot) were both hanging off of a cliff, and William Bell (birmingham mayor) was the only one there, yet could only save one while watching the other one plunge to its' doom...Let's just say it's a good thing that our Dragon has wings on his back.

From the dialogue I've had in the past month over at the Charlotte bbs, their fans and athletic department are taking care of business , but when you have the blessing of your own board of trustees to become a progressive part of your community, it makes all the difference. Contrary to popular belief around here, UAB's not trying to be like Auburn or alabama, it just wants to be the best it can be in Conference USA, but between our oppressive governing body and a very co-dependent and insecure sports media, we don't have the blessing to aspire to that level. After all is said and done, we're on our own here. I just want to be here long enough to see UAB football rise to the level of fan support and competitive fire that schools like East Carolina has evolved into. Hard to do in the "gridiron cesspool" that Birmingham has become content it seems, with being.

Oh definitely. That's nothing new, it's been that way since the '70's (maybe longer, older Pirates could speak on that better than I.) For the longest time State and Carolina refused to play us, because they thought there was a huge upside for us and very little for them (to be fair, probably an accurate statement.) But now we have more pro-ECU lawmakers in the Legislature that have forced them to play us regularly. Usually rotate, either Carolina or State every year. Home-and-homes.

RE:
Allen Thomas (Greenville mayor) is a Pirate through-and-through. He was actually student council president ~20 years ago.

I think it's easier to build support in a town like Greenville, which is a quintessential "college town". Lots of residents have ties to the university in one form or another, and sports, particularly Pirate football, is literally the biggest show in town. That's huge for building a fanbase. Not saying it's impossible in a city like Birmingham, but it makes it that much harder. Best of luck, I'd love to see UAB get the respect they deserve.

ECU in the home of market of Greenville does pretty well.

Slowly the RDU area is getting us on the air waves more and more.

I don't think the Conference CUSA coverage is where it needs to be..... Granted the ACC does have 4 NC teams in it so... But CUSA is a brand with one of the State's largest Universities in it so its news should get more love than it does.

RE: Equal Time! Media Coverage Of East Carolina Athletics & Conference USA)
@PirateTreasureNC, @YesIAm...Thank you both. Before I get into a couple of other items that may be of interest here, I want to congratulate the football fans of East Carolina for topping 20,000 season tickets sales thus far, that is phenomenal, and I would love to see UAB at least reach that plateau this year, don't have any definitive numbers, but reports have been posted that ticket sales have gone up substantially as well as donorships. I hope this is a sign of better days ahead, I know that this latest accomplishment in Greenville is for Pirate Nation. Way to go. I found out earlier in the week that one of our more popular sports radio personalities has been hired as a sideline reporter for a select number of Conference USA football games this season. The lovely and vibrant Rachel Baribeau of station 97.3 FM The Zone, and I tell you, she is completely stoked about this endeavor, Rachel is one of the few sports radio announcers that UAB and Conference USA can call an ally in this city/state, she more than welcomes callers about either, even uses Twitter (@RachelBaribeau) to take questions/comments from listeners, she is such a pleasure to converse with about sports or life in general, but she can be tough and assertive when need be, one caller accused her one time of being a racist (& he couldn't have been more wrong!) I happened to be listening that day, and she let him have it on the air, "both barrels." The guy called back the following day and apologized (as he should have), and she accepted it with class. Look for a drop dead gorgeous brunette with an uplifting genuine personality on the electric sidelines of East Carolina, I know she's going to enjoy the magnetic atmosphere. Her radio show airs M-F from 4 p.m -6 p.m eastern time. 1-855-230-ZONE (9663)

RE: Equal Time! (Media Coverage Of East Carolina Athletics & Conference USA)
Did anyone listen to Coach McNeil's timeslot on C-USA Media Day online? I caught the tail end of it (at work and it's a rat race around here, can't settle in and enjoy the moment) I almost didn't recognize him, he's lost so much weight and all. This would be his 2nd or 3rd season at ECU, right? I was gonna ask how he's been recieved there, but based on the recent news of having sold 20,000 season tickets thus far this year, I would think very well. I'm sure the expectations, if anything, have increased. It's going to be a very interesting season for the football teams of Conference USA. The competition's going to be fierce, and that's putting it mildly.
