On the flip side, why would anyone have to hold a press conference to announce that a player currently on the roster is going to remain there? Just brush off the rumor without all the pomp and circumstance. I think he is leaving.
Ladies and gentlemen you've seen yet again the Gus Reality Distortion Field.
Dyer is rumored to transfer to a Division II school in a report by a CBS site that focus on the NFL. Now consider how odd that is. If Dyer wishes to play immediately there are two FCS schools each within less than an hour of his home (Central Arkansas and Arkansas-Pine Bluff). In Division II there is Arkansas Tech a program often ranked in Division II and barely over an hour from his home if that far. Also within the same distance you have Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist also at the Division II level.
Pitt State didn't make much sense given that he could be on a team to win a conference title and make a deep playoff run potentially at the FCS or II level and be an hour from home.
I skimmed the Pitt State staff bios. No coach with ties to Auburn or another school that made it far recruiting him. No coach with ties to Arkansas. I then checked the roster. Four kids from Arkansas, none of whom would have likely known Dyer except from possibly a camp, because they all played in a different classification than Dyer did and lived 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours from Dyer.
Again nothing that causes this to make any sense.
My guess is that when the waiver was denied, an assistant at Pitt St took a flyer to contact Dyer or had someone contact him "unofficially" (of course). The writer heard the grapevine version which became Dyer to Pitt State.
As soon as the story hit twitter, multiple outlets (internet and LR broadcast TV) quickly reported denials from the ASU staff and from members of Dyer's family. Yet in the internet world that isn't good enough. Several players on the offense take to Twitter to deny Dyer is leaving but that doesn't appease anyone either.
So enter Gus Reality Distortion Field, never allow an opportunity for national attention pass. Less than 24 hours after working his way through the ESPN family, ASU calls a press conference to address the matter.
Less than an hour after the press conference ends this headline is on Sports Illustrated's web site "Dyer happy at Arkansas State, despite NCAA ruling". The top sports site in Arkansas has this up top "Dyer Staying At Arkansas State For 2013 Season, Doesn't Plan To Enter NFL". Similar headlines are starting to appear on TV station web sites across the state.
Someone puts something silly out on the web and Gus turns refuting it into a news story. Dyer goes on the record stating he won't declare for the draft next winter. The people who predicted Dyer flees if the NCAA rejects his appeal get to read stories about how he wants to play at ASU and how he likes being a Red Wolf. That reinforces the Malzahn recruiting message.
There simply was no way Malzahn was going to let this chance pass after what looks like an illegal recruiting attempt. ASU comes out looking better.
It's just like when they managed to get state-wide coverage of the assistants going to every high school in the state. Roberts had done it a few times before but he never invited the media to come film and photograph the coaches driving away from the stadium.
ASU owes some assistant at Pitt State a couple beers and a thick NY strip.
