Actually, if you read the entire clip, it's apparent when Obama said "that" he meant the roads and bridges, Internet etc. Not the business.
Here's the entire remark, and the
bolded part is what Romney's ad conveniently cut out--
Quote:If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be ‘cause I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something: There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.
Patently dishonest to cut off a sentence like that and tie it to later remarks so that it looks like he says "Let me tell you something: If you've got a business, you didn't build that" when there's 3 sentences in between.
I've said this on here many times. If you own a successful business and think you can accumulate all of this on your own, let's drop you in the Congo jungle and see how much wealth you leave with 20 years later (if you're alive). That's all Obama is saying. And if you're being intellectually honest, you'd agree. Society is a give and take and yes, government plays a large role in that. Would Rupert Murdoch's media empire be worth billions if everybody was illiterate? It sure would be hard to push the Wall Street Journal. But thanks to universal public education he has a market. Or if there were no interstate highways to transport the newspapers to the homes for delivery, paper to the printing press etc? At the least costs would rise. And of course there's the obvious examples of protection by the military, police and firefighters.
And the fact that the Internet was invented by defense (which is apparently what Libertarians approve of as constitutional) is a red herring. It doesn't rebut the fact it's still something achieved by the collective, and you
didn't build it on your own. As for the entitlements, they play a role in creating demand which churns our economic engine. If you're a landlord, you're helped by the Section 8 voucher system -- otherwise those millions of people would be on the street and there's be a lot more vacant apartments. If you're a farmer or grocer, you're helped by food stamps, because more people are buying your product. Hell, if you work for a car maker or dealer, you were helped by Cash for Clunkers. And to a lesser degree, we're ALL helped by all of these programs as these dollars flow through the channels and lead to increased productivity, and a higher standard of living for all of us.
But that's beside the point. His remarks are clearly being taken out of context.
